DeVry University Reviews
Student & Graduate Reviews (261)
After reading many of the reviews on here, I felt like I had to stand up for my Alma Mater. I am not sure why people are complaining about how expensive the school is. Everything is laid out there regarding cost of credit hours and full-time tuition rates. Multiply that by how many semesters / hours you need, and "voila", you have how much it's going to cost! It's not rocket science. I'm also confused about the people complaining about how difficult the courses are. Did you not want an actual education? If you aren't being challenged, you aren't learning. And no, this is not a fake review from DeVry. I am a former student. You can look me up on LinkedIn, if you need verification.
I began DeVry University Winter of 2011. It was supposed to be a 3 year program but it ended up being 4 years. There are positives and negatives to DeVry. They do have academic advisors that check with you every so often and help you schedule your classes. Their financial advisors also help you understand you costs and awards. Being able to be flexible in your schedule is awesome since I'm a single mom of two little ones. Though this was a great decision for me, it also proves difficult at times. Because it is a university, their costs are much higher. I think it is $600 per credit. For this reason, I ran out of loans my last year. Other than finances, DeVry offers loads of help and a flexible schedule.
Well... where do I begin?!?! Financial Aid Dept is absolutely ridiculous. Nothing they told me was adding up. So I did some research on my own, and what I learned made me sick. I kept calling them to get a straight story and they constantly lied to me. I started out as a "full time" student and when I called over a question I had over financial aid, and they told me I was part time. How in the world can they drop you to half time student when you enrolled as full time and doing school work as a full time student? Plus not informing you of this change. I had to submit a form of "student identification verification" which I went to my bank to have notarized. I sent it back over night by UPS. That was 2 months ago and it is still incomplete. I have called several times over this matter and I was told by student finance and my admissions advisor that the document was received and signed for but somehow it has disappeared so now my student financial aid will not be disbursed until the document is located and reviewed. This started in early February 2015, here it is almost middle of March, I have started school but racking up a big bill that I've already received a statement saying that I owe $1927.00 and I'm only in week 2 of school. None of this makes sense. My admissions advisor tells me one thing but financial aid office tells me another. I wish I could submit a screenshot of my emails with them but I can't. It will back my complaint up 100%. Financial aid office told me to stop talking to my admissions advisor and my admissions advisor told me that financial aid needed to get their crap together. I am so fed up. This is the most aggravating school and you cannot get the same story or truth from anyone.
This college and professor can live by your debt. You learn almost nothing except major. Do not spend your money and sacrifice yourself for this fraud company. Just go to comunity college. You cannot get a job and just will be student that have lot of debt. Their employee have a lot of good benefit from your debt. Ask them how many their emplyee child is studying in this school....Nobody...
This is the worst institution in the entire country!! Do not go here!! I attended in the 97-98 school year. They will take outrageous college loans on you. I am still paying on them in 2015 and I only attended for one year! They do not care about anything but swindling you out of money, and if you have any issue what-so-ever, it is your fault! I moved from NC to Columbus Oh to start school on Oct 31, 1997. When I got to the college to get assigned my dorm room, I was asked if I had any special request/situations that they needed to know about my housing. I told them I was gay and needed to room with someone who was ok with this. They assigned me a 2 bedroom, one bath apartment with 5 other guys (which they charged each of us $1200/mo rent). When I met them I knew that it was best if I went back into the closet. Three of them were basic thugs, one was a jock, and the other was a drug dealer. All of them were homophobes, this was apparent by them using the words faggot and queer in EVERY sentence. Everything was fine until just after April. I had met a local boy and we started dating on the down low. But one day I was invited by some lesbian friends of mine to go to a gay nightclub with my boyfriend and them. As we were leaving I heard someone behind me yell "Fuck you Faggot!" and I was hit in the back of the head with a liquor bottle. My room mates curious as to what I was doing had followed me that night and seen me leaving the club holding my boyfriends hand. They proceeded to beat the crap out of both of us. When it was all over I had a broken nose, two black eyes and a 2 inch gash in my scalp that required 6 stitches. I called the police but they told me there was nothing they could do because there were no witnesses, but they would accompany me to pick up my things at the apartment. When we arrived there, they had removed all my possessions from my room and thrown them into the mud, where 2 people were helping themselves to the pile. When the cop entered the apartment at my request, he arrested them for possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. Which of course they began to threaten to kill me, beat me again and so on. The next day I went to the school to inform them of what had happened. When I was talking to the counselor, she proceeded to tell me it was my fault that it all happened for "choosing that lifestyle". She offered to move me into a new apartment but without 5 other roommates I would be responsible for the entire rent of 7200/mo. Her recommendation was to go back to my apartment and "make nice with the roommates they had assigned me"! Unwilling to take my life into my own hands, I moved back home. This is just one instance of Devry being a crappy college. The federal government should not allow this company to take out loans to cover its EXTREMELY HIGH tuition. I cannot stress this enough..... DO NOT GO HERE!!!!!!!
I have a Bachelors degree in Network and Communications. My first job out of school (with no experience) paid $52,000. A year later I changed companies and was making $60,000 and now just 3 years after graduation I am making $72,000. I have attend a State University and both schools are accredited by the same institution; I feel I received better instruction at DeVry. I am sure each case is different, but I am very happy with my DeVry experience. I applied myself and put the responsibility on my shoulders and now I am reaping the fruits of hard work.
This school is the absolutely worst institution in the country, they're a bunch of corrupt, heartless bastards that should all burn in hell. They'll take all the money you have and give you nothing in return. They don't care if you succeed or not they just want your money. I wouldn't recommend this school to a dog so please don't ever get involved with them they'll ruin your life.
THE OTHER DAY I DECIDED TO QUIT DEVRY AFTER 2 1/2 YRS. THE FOLLOWING REASONS WHY I MADE THIS DECISION ARE: FIRST. I SHOULD HAVE DONE MY HOMEWORK ON DEVRY BUT I DID NOT KNOW ANYONE WHO ATTENDED THE SCHOOL FOR ADVICE SO I PARTIALLY BLAME MYSELF. THE ONLY GUIDANCE I HAD WAS FROM THE ADMISSION ADVISORS. WHEN YOU GO TO ORIENTATION THE SCHOOL INFORMS STUDENTS HOW GREAT SOME BENEFITS ARE AT DEVRY. FOR EXAMPLE: TUTORING AND SOME SOFTWARE PRODUCTS ARE AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS FOR FREE AND THAT’S SOMETHING YOU CANT GET AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE WHERE THEY CHARGE YOU. WELL BIG DEAL, SAY YOU SUCK AT MATH AND TUTORING IS ABOUT $100 PER SESSION. YOU KNOW WHAT, SAYS ITS $200 PER SESSION. YOU STILL ARE GOING TO BE SAVING MONEY IF YOU TAKE CLASSES AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE OPPOSE TO DEVRY. THE FIRST RED FLAG I NOTICED ABOUT DEVRY ARE THE PROFESSORS. MOST PROFESSORS ARE GREAT BUT THEY HAVE TO TEACH BY THE BOOK. CLASSES ARE ONLY EIGHT WEEKS LONG RATHER THAN 15-18 WEEKS AT A COMMUNITY/MAJOR UNIVERSITY. SO PROFESSORS ARE RUSHING YOU TO COMPLETE YOUR COURSE. FOR EXAMPLE I HAD A PROFESSOR IN A MATH CLASS THAT WOULD JUST SIT AROUND AND LET STUDENTS WORK ON THEIR MATH PROBLEMS OVER SOME COMPUTER SOFTWARE AND IF YOU NEEDED HELP THE PROFESSOR WOULD GO AROUND AND HELP THE STUDENT WITH A PROBLEM OR PROBLEM(S). WELL, WHEN YOU HAVE ABOUT 20-25 STUDENTS IN ONE CLASS AND MOST OF THE TIME HALF NEEDS HELP, FOUR HOURS GO BY FAST. AND WHEN IT’S TIME TO GO, SO IS THE PROFESSOR. SHE WOULDNT ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS AFTER CLASS. SHE WOULD SAY "CLASS IS OVER AND I HAVE TO GO". THE SECOND RED FLAG CAME WHEN MY OWN PROFESSORS AT DEVRY WOULD INFORM THEIR STUDENTS "IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE TAKING THEIR CLASS BECAUSE YOU CAN TAKE THE SAME CLASS AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOR THE SAME CREDIT" WHEN I HEAR THIS COMING FROM A DEVRY’S EMPLOYEES..SOMETHING IS WRONG! I FINALLY DUMMIED UP AFTER 2 1/2 YEARS. IT MAKES NO SENSE GOING TO DEVRY AND PAYING OVER $600 PER CREDIT WHEN YOU CAN PAY BETWEEN $50-60 PER CREDIT AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE THAT CAN BE TRANSFERRED TO A UNIVERSITY. SO WHY IN THE WORLD PAY OVER $2500 FOR A FREAKIN FRESHMEN ENGLISH COURSE WHEN YOU CAN PAY $200-$250 AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE. THE THIRD RED FLAG WAS YOU HAVE TO GO BY DEVRY'S SCHEDULE. SAY FOR EXAMPLE YOU WANT TO TAKE ALL YOUR BASIC COURSES AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE..MAKES SENSE RIGHT? WELL ONE OF YOUR MAJOR COURSES IS NOT AVAILABLE JANUARY BUT IT’S AVAILABLE IN MARCH. FOR FINANCIAL AID TO PAY FOR COURSES THEY NEED TO BE TAKEN BOTH JAN AND MAR.THEREFORE TAKING MONEY OUT OF YOUR FINANCIAL AID RATHER THAN SAVING. THE FOURTH RED FLAG ARE THE STUDENT SUCCESS COACHES. WHEN YOU START AT DEVRY YOU ARE SET UP WITH A SUCCESS COACH THAT ADVISES YOU ABOUT YOUR FINANCIAL AID,CLASSES NEEDING TO BE TAKEN AND WHICH PATH TO GO WITH, ETC. YOU WOULD THINK YOU WOULD ONLY HAVE ONE SUCCESS COACH TO BE FAMILIAR AND COMFORTABLE WITH AND GUIDE YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. THE 2 1/2 YEARS I'VE BEEN THERE I LOST COUNT HOW MANY SUCCESS COACHES I HAD AND WHEN ONE COACH ADVISES ME ABOUT ONE THING, ANOTHER COACH WOULD TELL ME SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFERENT CAUSING ALOT OF CONFUSION. OVERALL, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND DEVRY UNIVERSITY OR ANY FOR PROFIT SCHOOLS SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY HOG YOUR FINANCIAL AID. SIMPLE AS THAT. MY ADVICE: BE PATIENT. WHAT I MEAN BY THAT IS BE FAMILIAR WITH YOUR COURSES. DO NOT RUSH TO GRADUATE LIKE DEVRY OFFERS. TAKE THE 15-18 WEEK COURSES. I COULD CARE LESS IF YOU ARE RIGHT OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL OR AN ADULT WITH A FAMILY BECAUSE I GUARANTEE YOU…IT’S GOING TO HELP IN THE LONG RUN. YOU HAVE TO ASK YOURSELF, WOULD YOU RATHER PAY APPROX $2500 FOR AN ASSOCIATES DEGREE OR $30-40K FOR AN ASSOCIATES DEGREE AT DEVRY? WOULD YOU PAY $18-30K FOR A BACHELORS DEGREE AT A UNIVERSITY OR $60-80K+ FOR A BACHELORS AT DEVRY? BY THE WAY, THE MAX YOU CAN BORROW FROM THE GOVT IS UNDER 60K, SO IF YOU NEED MORE MONEY TO PAY CLASSES, I WAS ADVISED TO SIGN UP FOR SCHOLARSHIPS AND STUDENT LOANS FROM A BANK CAUSING MORE DEBT. GREAT ADVICE FROM MY SUCCESS COACH, HUH? AS FOR ME, IM ALMOST 30K IN DEBT AND I ONLY TOOK ONE MAJOR COURSE WITH 19 MORE COURSES LEFT. SO YOU DO THE MATH. THERE WAS NO WAY I COULD HAVE MADE IT. I REALLY HOPE THIS HELPS YOU GUYS AND I WISH YOU THE BEST. GOOD LUCK!
Horrible experience!!! The first two classes I took were Finance and Accounting. The textbook the school chose was not very helpful; it had minimal examples and those it did have were often incorrect. Midterm and Final exam were based on the book used the previous year which had information that was not covered in my class. In the accounting class the instructor did not teach not to include the text for this class was terrible as well. Instead we watched videos of other instructors from schools such as "WaldenUniversity" teach the same course including examples. For this to be an accounting class I was amazed that the instructor never wrote on the broad once. Complaints are not taken seriously. If you're in it to learn it please do not waste yout time with this school. It will be a major setback and a waste of time and money.
I competed my bachelors degree on time, 3 years. I was working 5 days a week 50 hours a week Monday through Friday, so the flexibility was key for me. The job I had was not in my field of study and Devry gave me the fundamentals I need to get my foot in the door. I accepted a job at Nortel Networks as a Systems Engineer a week before I graduated making about $30,000 a year more than I was making in my previous job. After 7 years at Nortel I accepted a position at Cisco Systems as a Sr. Systems Engineer for 8 years. I am now a Systems Engineering Manage at a technology start up. Sense graduating from Devery I have increased my income 5x and in my current job I travel all over the world working with the largest Service Providers in every country. It takes a lot of hard work and a high GPA is a must to get a good job if you are just starting out in your field of study. If you think you're going to buy your degree from Devry and breeze through class you are sadly mistaken. I have worked with serveral people in my career that are Devry grads that have a story similar to mine. If you are not a 100% dedicated to completing your degree you need to rethink going to any school. Once you commit to student loans you will never make the money you need to pay it back without that Degree.
