Liberty University Online Reviews
Student & Graduate Reviews (181)
My experience with Liberty University is not a good one. They say that the teachers will contact you within 24-48 hours, but I went longer than that. Many times I could not even get them through phone calls! Student services were the worst! Every time that I call Acedemics or Finicial Aid I would get different people.
I feel that if they truly care about their students they would build teams for them so the student would have someone that they feel comfortable with. The setup for tests were confusing at times, I would study for them and they would go totally off topic with the current lesson. I did not "flunk" out. I got my assocaite's with UOP and currently attending another online college which I love.
This is a very good school. I am currently in attendance and I am pleased to say that this is def. not a mill school. The instructors make sure that the students are writing on the level needed for the degree in which they are pursuing. I graduated with my BA from a local community college in NYC with over a 3.0 GPA and I am working very hard in this school so that I may finish with at least a 3.5.
If you are looking for a school that are just handing out degrees then do not attend this school. Nevertheless, if you want to know that you have earned your deg"ree, then this is the correct school for you.
There is only one downside and that is: I am use to an "A" being a 90 or above, but in this school an "A" is a 93 or 96 and above depending on the course and your specified major. I have not had any problems with Liberty University Online and will be graduating May 11, 2012 from the MA Human Service program. I hope this review was helpful. God Bless.
The negative reviews are obviously bogus if one looks closely...
Anyway I used to attend LU when I was young, and I recently returned to finish my degree now that I am older.
I have immensely enjoyed my experience since Day 1.
I loved all of my professors, they were wonderful people and teachers who responded in kind- and assisted me with whatever I needed. Never any problems.
I have received excellent feedback from all departments, prompt and polite feedback at that. Never any problems.
I have loved all of my classes, I have appreciated the value of each, even the work required (PHIL 201, lol)- I learned much and also learned about myself in turn. Truly amazing experience, and I am truly thankful I am able to attend this school.
I am considering the Bible Institute available online as well through LU, as I desire to learn as much as I can about Scriptures. I could never have enough.
I started a few years ago at Liberty University Online. My wife had been studying online line for a year at Liberty. We both enjoy going to this school. I would not change this school for another. I have also been to their campus in Lynchburg Va.WOW!
They really take care of their students. It is a must see campus! The classes are hard at times, be this is to be expected. You are expected to do quite a bit of work, tests are the hardest.
First off, let me say that I love God with all of my heart. I was eager to go to a "Christian" school, even if just online.
I'm also passionate about business, which is why I decided to get my MBA. I was thrilled for the opportunity to get an MBA from a Christian perspective and learn how I could glorify God and serve people through business.
Liberty is concerned about one thing, I'd say money but I don't even think that's true. In reality, they are concerned about their image. Truth means little to them if it conflicts with what they perceive their own self-worth to be.
3 examples: 1) I quickly found that Liberty primarily based their grades upon tests which they purchased from McGraw-Hill and other secular textbook publishers. This would not be an issue except for the tests were consistently wrong. Each class, I had to spend at least 2 additional hours per test writing short answer responses, proving that my answers were indeed correct and the tests were errant. Even grammar was non-existent - often times, questions were difficult or impossible to understand given the lack of proper English. I took 10 classes with Liberty University - 7 had this issue (that I could prove). After presenting sound arguments to Liberty to resolve the issues, both for myself and future students, the issue was quickly swept under the table. In all fairness, professors often changed my grade and complained to me privately that they knew it was a problem. However, the administration refused to accept truth as fact.
2) Liberty is the largest "Christian" university in the US. As I stated before, I was extremely excited to learn business from the Christian perspective. Unfortunately for Liberty, God is, at worst, a marketing ploy and, at best, a footnote. I found that Liberty's idea of Christianity has nothing to do with Christ's example of servitude, ministry, or selflessness. Liberty's "Christianity" over-spiritualizes empathy. Conveniently, after every email where they essentially tell you that they don't care, they end it with "God bless" or "In Christ." Professors in classes emphasized secular textbooks and viewpoints and never showed how Christians should serve as the example in everyday life.
3) Liberty's education is purely focused on highlighting professor's research vs. real-world application. Papers, tests, and other assignments are graded solely on the basis of one's ability to cite other professor's research, even if it conflicts with reality. Grades are allotted based on hoop-jumping, such as APA format, peer-reviewed research citations, and conformity to textbook conclusions. Any attempt to present new ideas based on actual experiences or real-world examples is seen as insufficient and unworthy. In order to pass a class, myself and other students (during team projects) actually had to start conversations by distinguishing the difference between reality and what was being taught.
In closing, I would not choose Liberty Online University again if my life depended on it. I've already let my financial life depend on it and I'm left with mountains of debt and nothing to show for it. If you have the option, choose Phoenix or another online university. I wish I had.
Liberty University Online is top-notch. From their student services to their caring professors, Liberty exceeded all of my expectations for an online school. The courses are challenging and well-rounded. I honestly feel like I am getting an excellent education that will send me fully equipped into my field of choice. I would encourage anyone who is looking to get their degree online to give Liberty a try. This school will cause you to grow academically and also will cause you to grow spiritually. Awesome School!!!
Liberty is a great school. I have read some of the reviews, which to me seem bogus. The work is graded. It is more than chatting between students. I have had to write quite a few 10 page research papers, which got graded for format, grammar, etc...
I have had nothing but a positive experience. The teachers, which are required to have at least a master's, have been for the student and not against. They have offered advice on writing, given chances to retake tests, and I have even been able to call them at work or on their cell if I needed to, which I have.
One person commented that if you are not a self-starter then this is not for you. I totally agree. this program is what you make out of it. You will only get out of it, what you out into it. If you need a teacher looking over your shoulder every minute or have problems with initiative, online learning is not for you. This will be my third year at Liberty Online and I have never had any problems with financial aid or scheduling classes, so far. I would highly recommend this program.
I currently am majoring in Business management online and I love it!! The online prorgrams liberty has are wonderful, and the academic advisors and so very helpful!! I once had to sign up for classes and I called but I was number 30 . I hung up and signed up for classes with an advisor through chat and it took me two seconds. Great school!!!
I am into my second semester at Liberty and have determined that is a pure joke. My first course went rather smoothly, with no issues. None other than the professor sending group messages about how busy he is and to pray for him because he can barely keep up with his family life and life itself. JOIN THE CLUB.
The issues more began the second course into the third, and I find it interesting that both of these “professors are women. I can share a few insights I have noted during my short time so far:
- The professors are not truly professors. I am not sure what their credentials are, but they work around their own schedules (personal lives), and clearly put their job responsibilities last on their priority list. A few have even put in their weekly announcements that “family is first” – pray to get through the class if you are suffering” type of postings. Or “don’t worry about your classes – family life is the most important.” You don’t say this to people who are borderline passing – people PAY TO PASS. To tell people to NOT WORRY ABOUT GRADES BECAUSE GOD GRACED YOU WITH A FAMILY IS PURE B.S.
- You submit assignments that are mostly graded automatically on the system, and the other work is mainly reading and posting messages to a group forum back and forth, which, is a joke. They generally assign one or two at most projects that require them to lift a finger to grade (that aren’t automatically graded). This is a self-running system they use (Blackboard) that just resets each new course with the press of a few buttons. What’s even more disturbing is the total laziness such as “class, the syllabus states that assignments are due on Sunday – it’s really Monday,” or, “the assignment says to work in groups, but the real deal is that this is to be done individually.” Hey, I have an idea – CHANGE THE DOCUMENTS IN THE SYSTEM SO THAT THERE IS NO CONFUSION. WHY IS THIS SO DIFFICULT?
Then they have the nerve to get irritated if you ask about it or, that you are off a day because you missed some posting you wouldn’t otherwise need to worry about checking because you rely on the course outline for this information to be accurate. In a nutshell, they sip drinks all week on their decks or change diapers all week and get to you at their convenience – PAID.
Students have deadlines and have to adhere to them, yet these “professors” get to students at their leisure and often grade late. Also, I have had questions about assignments due days in advance, with NO RESPONSE, hence, my grade suffered unnecessarily. Had I received a response (help) – I would have understood the assignment – or the subject matter necessary to COMPLETE IT. - Also, they do not care if you pass or fail. If you need help, they do not offer to extend themselves at all – they won’t call you, everything is done via email – it is essentially the students responsibility to read the textbooks for information and If that isn’t clear, don’t expect to get a good grade because there is NO OTHER HELP. The emails sent by these “professors” always skirt around your questions and they never HELP AT ALL. You are lucky to get a response also..most of my emails go with no response from these wankers.
Your grade is heavily reliant on your Christianity. If you don’t sign off “god bless you,” “in Christ,” or add scriptures to your emails or forum postings, good luck at this place. - You are treated like an idiot, not a student or customer paying their salaries. They disregard you and treat you like a joke for attending their online program, which, to me discredits them altogether..if they treat you like a joke, they realize they are too.
You stand little chance of getting an A in these courses, unless, like I said, you exhibit that you are a fellow Christian. They NEVER give a perfect score, and an “A” IS STILL DOCKED DOWN TO THE LOWEST A POSSIBLE. I think they need to appear that they don’t “hand out” A’s, then students who deserve an A do not get one due to their fear in losing their jobs to give A students A’s. I HAD A HIGH B IN MY FIRST CLASS WHICH WAS 2 POINTS AWAY FROM AN A. HAD I NOT BEEN STUPIDLY DOCKED ON B.S., for the sake of not giving a good score (usually on stupid forum postings) – I would have made the A.
There is no way to backtrack and they do not consider anything but their numbers system. Even at a real college, professors factor in how well a class did overall and will assign a curve at times, or, if you are clearly an achiever, and your grade falls between two, there is lenience/discretion to issue the appropriate fit.
I get NO response to any of their online “help” such as their prayer program, etc. I submitted a prayer request and NO ONE PRAYED FOR ME. They are supposed to respond to confirm that a prayer was conducted.
I have mailed my transcripts in to their admissions office twice and they still claim non-receipt and haven’t entered my transfer credits. I asked them to then contact my schools themselves to order the transcripts – still nothing. They want you to do all of their work for them and if there are any administrative issues, they do not rectify them. Too much time has lapsed now for me to not have my credits entered.
Their grading is subject to their mood and how they feel about you. I get messages that I did a great job on my forum postings, or got the question right, but for whatever reason, my points were docked significantly, with no explanation. When I ask, I get nothing. I’ve been told I did great but was docked 12-15 points on postings when my writing is certainly better than most of the other postings. I really wonder what grades these flamboyant Christians are getting.
You get no feedback on assignments to even know if you are right or wrong. I have had one professor who posts comments either via email or on the online grading system, but they are generalized, and it is clear that they have 4 or 5 general comments they give people and they do a cut and paste..no feedback is specific to your work. IF YOU ASK YOU SHALL NOT RECEIVE AT THIS PLACE.
The financial aid section on their ASIST system is not what you will find in your statements from your loan provider. They tack on a fee that they won’t explain – nominal as it is, it’s money that you pay them with no explanation. If you ask about it, your emails go unaddressed.
They blow you off ay every chance.
The courses are more focused towards Christianity than the subject itself, which has NO VALUE AT ALL in the business world, which is why people pay this kind of money for a degree…for BUSINESS EDUCATION. They’ve managed to tie this into courses that I wouldn’t have imagined would be possible. - I am looking forward to winter term because we get the semester off. I plan to seriously deliberate the unvalued of this school. I really didn’t want to have to transfer again but I can’t pay 30 grand or more in loans and wind up with no more knowledge than before I started. Many of us actually want the education, not just the paper. The paper is nothing without knowledge. Knowledge is power – not a meaningless degree.
Liberty accepted me into their online program when they received my transcripts. Then, they awarded me financial aid - a subsidized loan, an unsubsidized loan and a pell grant.
They received all the funding from the Department of Education but only credited me with the loans, keeping the pell grant. I called several times and was told to keep checking ASIST (online account) for "updates."
The semester is now near over, and they have successfully stolen my money. The financial aid department is incompetent, dishonest and has terrible communication skills. Go elsewhere! Trust me!
