"It is a great school with a wide range of courses available to its students. However, the advisory department is lacking and you often have to find your own answers."

"I am very satisfied with the level of education that the counseling program provides at Northern Illinois University. We are accredited by CACREP, and have some wonderful teachers and professors. Many of our professors have help e-board positions on ACA divisions. They have real world experience and critical thinking skills that allow us to have elaborate discussions in class. I am very happy that I have chosen to attend Northern Illinois University to obtain my Master's degree in School Counseling."

"I thought this was a great University. It was the perfect size to give the university feel it small enough to be comfortable. I feel like I had a good education at this college. there are many activities to do as well."

"I liked my college experience for the most part. It was close enough to home. However, a lot of people would go home for the weekends therefore labeling the school as a "suitcase" college. The campus was nice and the so was the town. There is a downtown DeKalb right off of campus with some nice restaurants and town bars."

"I could not have made a better college choice! Northern Illinois University (NIU) was a wonderful university to attend! The faculty and students were a pleasure to work with. The variety of classes and cultures on campus was rewarding. The surrounding community was very supportive of our athletic teams, and activities going on. Our motto "Forward, Together Forward" was founded after a horrific tragedy on campus, and the experience truly brought us closer together. I am so proud to be an NIU alumni! Go Huskies!"

"The classes were a mixed bag but mostly good, or at least as good as the effort you put into them. The career services department is worse than useless, unless you're from one of the four or five majors they care about. If you are studying engineering, business, nursing, or teaching, you'll be fine. Otherwise you will get no help at all."

"I enjoyed it. It's not hard. People that fail out is due to them not trying generally. Learn basic study habits. If you don't think you can do it, don't do it. You will end up owing a lot of money and, in most cases, end up in a worse position than you would have been had you not tried."

"Pros: Department really feels like they want me here, I feel accepted and appropriately put to work. Cons: Tuition remission does not include a load of unnecessary fees and costs from the school totaling $2,000 dollars I have to pay for on my own."

"NIU has a pretty campus, but a lot of students don't seem to get too involved in school activities or clubs. Most students leave on weekends which deteriorates the college atmosphere some want when they leave home."

"Although Northern's Masters of Arts in Special Education (with LBS1 endorsement) is relatively affordable, there are very few Graduate Assistantships available to students who are pursuing degrees in non-Counseling and non-Secondary Education programs."

"I attended NIU for my undergraduate and graduate degree. I feel as though NIU has really stepped it up in the last few years to become a better school!"

"My plan was to pursue just a Master's course Statistics. The professors are so vehement in their delivery and they care so much about students' appreciation of the subjects in class and in the real world. I have now decided to switch to a PhD not because I planned to, but because I have been made to believe in the subjects and I love doing what I am doing. If I have another chance I will still be a "Husky". Go Huskies!!"

"The program advertised itself as something for those who want to return to college to get a graduate degree. However, very little considerations have been made to respect those who work full time and attend the limited night courses. First the majority of the courses are during the day with only a limited selection of night and weekend classes, it is very rare to see online classes. The classes held during the day are the ones that would generate the most interest among graduate students who work full-time for example Computer Security, Mobile programming, and AI courses are held in the mornings and noon time slots. Like all schools there are some professors who work well with graduate students providing flexibility for those who work full-time and maintaining a atmosphere that is open to discussion and debate among the students. Other professors are over-zealous providing loads of homework, and assigning group projects, then marking points off for little mistakes. Overall the atmosphere for graduate students who work full time is unfriendly and inconsiderate to students 9-5 work schedules. One of the most memorable and repeated phrases I have heard in this program from staff is "If you want to know how this applies to the real world, go to another school that teaches that." The diversity of graduates students is very limited most classes I have attended contain a majority of Indian students with often times no other ethnicity being present in the class aside form myself. That being said the program is a mess if your a graduate student who works full time, the only thing keeping it together are the few professors who really understand their students and who give some of the most outstanding lectures I have ever heard."
