"Southern Connecticut State University is affordable and provides students with a well-rounded and functional education in their area of study. As a psychology major I had many professors who were committed to helping students arrive at their final academic or career goal by walking them through each step of the process to get there. My biggest piece of advice to new students would be even if you do not like the school or the campus after the first semester, continue into the spring semester and then reevaluate after you have completed the entire year. So many people at Southern, including myself, do not like their fall semester and want to transfer but the spring semester is entirely different. The spring semester does not have the stress of transitioning and starting something new so you can appreciate the school and your environment in a completely different way."

"-Supportive teaching staff -Great variety of field-related club activities on-campus -Local activities are plenty for on-campus students The staff at SCSU is really accommodating to the working full-time undergraduate student and looks out for the interest of its students. The schools also provided a lot of career fairs though I would have appreciated more connections to career pathways within my field of study at these provided events. The campus is also always renovating and making newer facilities available to students so you know your tuition dollars are going to good use in a short amount of time so you as a student can enjoy the newest technologies and experiences during your degree program."

"Southern Connecticut State University's Public Health Program is a well-balanced program that touches on all aspects of public health. From food hygiene to epidemiology to planning programs. The teachers are very knowledgeable and really prepare you for any career path within the Public Health Field. The only aspect I feel I was not prepared was a more scientific background. Perhaps, since many nursing students used public health as a background, it would have been more helpful to add in more science courses to the program. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this program and felt adequately prepared to find a job and begin my career within this field."

"I completed both my Master's degrees at Southern Connecticut State University. The first was in Exercise Physiology and the second in Public Health. Both degrees have made a significant impact into my personal and professional success. The faculty in both programs are top notched and truly care about their students success. Many years after graduating, I continue to stay in contact with them for mentors in my field and certainly for this newest pursuit of my PhD. I would highly recommend anyone interested in SCSU to commit to themselves and have a great learning experience."

"While this is a large school, The Political Science department is very small. This allows for many one-on-one sessions and interaction with professors. All of the professors in this department care and know their students. If the student is willing to ask for help the help will be given. As for other majors that are larger, I know it is more competitive and harder to make interaction with professors. Overall, this was a great institution if you are looking for a large school and community."

  • Degree: Social Work
"The Master's in Social Work program at Southern Connecticut State University is an incredible program that I highly suggest to anyone interested in pursuing an MSW degree. The professors are extremely knowledgeable about the courses they are teaching and work with students to work through any difficulties or confusion they may have. SCSU requires MSW students to complete an internship each year - and finds placements for every student in the first year, which is helpful in decreasing the stress of starting a new program. Although they encourage students to not work full time while enrolled in the program due to the heavy class/internship schedule, they offer night and weekend classes to fit almost any schedule. SCSU has the lowest tuition in the area - which is also a huge positive when comparing to other local schools (UConn, Quinnipiac, etc.)."

"Southern Connecticut State University is currently preparing me for a career in Speech Language Pathology. The professors and administration are 100% invested in you as a student and will bend over backward to help you succeed in your future career. Every class is aimed at making you a better clinician, and SCSU's employment rate after the program is 100%. I would absolutely recommend this program to others."

"I chose this school for graduate school because it was close to home , but I didn't realize how competitive it was to get into the graduate program. The on-site clinic and the professors were great in preparing us for our final project and completing our degree, as well as for beginning our careers."

"I appreciated many of the professors in the English department, however, other professors out of this department did not take their classes seriously. The financial aid department is horrible at this university and recognized for losing paperwork. Overall attending SCSU is a regret i now carry with me."

  • Degree: Marriage & Family Therapy
"Southern Connecticut State University is the oldest and longest standing COAMFTE-accredited programs in Connecticut since 1983, the Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) Program, students receive the unparalleled opportunity to participate in the Gestalt Therapy Training Program to build stronger therapist-client relationships focused upon the individuals experience in the present moment for personal responsibility. In addition, Southern Connecticut State University Marriage and Family therapy program is well recognized for focusing on the self of the therapist. This is an important components for future MFT 's to learn to become an effective therapist. I have learned that this concept of self of the therapist consists not only of my own resolution of family of origin issues but also the development of my own critical consciousness and cultural competency."

  • Degree: Biology
"Earning a Bachelors of Science in Biology from Southern Connecticut State University is a worthwhile choice that I made, with the intention of eventually applying for graduate school after. Coming into the university as a freshmen in 2012, I was at first disappointed with the program curriculum, specially in regards to the lack of classes that I wanted to take. However, I saw multiple changes that occurred both within the department of Biology and the university itself. Some things that are noteworthy about this changes is that the department, especially the faculty, deeply care for their students. New faculty have been hired that teach a wide variety of classes that can satisfy student interest. Another thing to note is that the university is always trying to reinvent itself to become a better institution. A new president has been hired, who is very student centered, and who deeply cares about what is going on within the university. Lastly, this institution is affordable, especially if you want a degree that can help you get accepted to graduate school. A student can use the learning that they received in this institution as they apply these to the professional world."

"Southern Connecticut State University is a diverse campus with a variety of programs. The Social Work program is outstanding and their are professors who really want to help the students learn and make an impact in the profession. The BSW program requires a 400 hour internship with supervision which I think is excellent since this is a preview of what you will have to do in the MSW program."

"The professors at Southern welcome students of all experience levels, and help individuals achieve their professional goals. The program encourages students to explore various public health issues, and then critically analyze the problems and potential solutions. The program and professors are flexible so students can tailor their assignments to personal interests, which is appreciated by many. I participated in an international course in Guatemala, and was profoundly impacted and humbled by my experiences. I notice my personal intellectual and emotional growth, and I believe this program has contributed to my self confidence. After graduation I will move on to dental school, and know I will benefit by having a public health perspective. I look forward to my future endeavors, and know I will have the Southern community behind me."

"I am into the first month of the Master of a Public Health program at Southern Connecticut State University. This program courses will teach the necessary tools of promoting, improving and maintaining the public's health. Although, I am only one month into the program both classes, Foundation of Public Health and Public Health Research Methods, have been interesting and stimulating and has allowed me to take back what I have learned so far and apply it to the work I currently in the public health field."
