"My senior year of high school I had it set that this is where I wanted to go, specifically to cheer and be in the nursing program. Once I got here I hated it and was extremely homesick even though my home isn't far. Southern doesn't feel like home to me more like a burden. If you're coming here for nursing just pick another school, I promise you you're not missing anything. This school is money hungry to the extreme. The nursing school isn't the best fit, I don't know about any other majors here but the nursing school is not it. I could go on and on. Yes, I know every school has their flaws but this is to another level, these things I pointed out is just the tip of the iceberg."

  • Degree: Biology
"At Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, I received a bachelors degree in Biological Sciences. I thoroughly enjoyed the overall experience that the institution provided for me. Everything from student activities (football games, college band, social activities) to classes and educational opportunities have been important in shaping my future. I had the opportunity to participate in the college band for all 4 years of my undergraduate matriculation, and it afforded me the opportunity to form relationships in an organization and continue my love for music, all while representing my institution on a national level. I had the opportunity to be a part of the Honors College during the 4 years of my matriculation, and this provided for me opportunities to participate in biomedical research and create and approved thesis. As a student in the College of Biological Sciences, I had an overall good experience. However, as a pre-medical student while being there, I now feel that I was not properly prepared for my career choice in comparison to other students from other institutions around the country. I feel that some professors were not supportive in us reaching our goals of becoming a physician; however, there were other professors who were very helpful. I also believe that some courses were not rigorous enough for us to be competitive students in our respective fields. There were also issues that stemmed from changes in leadership that caused issues with student life and fees; however, I believe that the institution is more stable now, and this should no longer be an issue for others."

"Overall, Southern University and A&M College is a great institution. I received a great education, met great people, and became family with people in my department. Southern has a family vibe once you get comfortable. Everybody knows everybody and they are willing to help you with anything if you ask. I love my alma mater and wouldn't change that for anything."

"I love my school. I was able to meet people easily and also was able to contact my professors and ask questions in class. My school help me grow mentally, spiritually and education wise. I become confident in myself as well did others. I joined a sorority and met amazing people. Now ill be attending the University of Southern California in fall 2017 and Southern University helped me with that."

  • Degree: Public Policy
"The Nelson Mandela School of Public Policy at Southern University and A & M College is great for graduate students especially interested in a public service career. The program affords networking opportunities with public servants in key positions from states such as Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas, Florida down to Washington, who bring practical knowledge and experience to class and opportunities for other students to participate in. The professors are thorough, friendly, have a good understanding and know how to pass the knowledge and get you to equally work hard, at earning a practical degree. The program has a good reputation of its students getting into points of authority and key positions even before graduating the program and it is highly recommended. It also takes into cognizance the working class group who might be interested in pursuing higher degrees."

"Southern University is the epitome of an HBCU in the form the true College Experience. I could go on and on about the fried chicken and red beans every Monday or the fun festivities that take place every Pretty Wednesday in the Student Union but what really makes the Jaguar Nation amazing is the rich culture incorporated into the learning environment in and out of the class rooms. Nowhere else will you find such fantastic vibes of academic excellence. You learn from professors who also went there and want to see you succeed."

"Southern is a great school for an ambitious student. Less ambitious students can potentially get lost in their programs. The registration process is a bit frustrating until you have done it a couple of times. The engineering program, while challenging, left us wanting when it came to real world application, labs, and licensing prep."

"The small class sizes allows for a lot of personal interaction and one on one development between graduate students and professors. Additional Southern University has a very active Alumni base that is ideal for networking. There are administrative areas and outdated technological resources that could stand to be improved."
