Stenberg College Reviews
Student & Graduate Reviews (16)
DO NOT ATTEND THIS COLLEGE! This college lacks professionalism and credibility at ALL LEVELS. Most of their instructors are not qualified as they do not have any experience in teaching or a degree in education. Anyone who is practicing in the field can be called instructor and they only teach you the things based on what they know but many times they are inaccurate. Exams and assignments often go missing and they will not take any responsibility of it. Stenberg College has a bad reputation out there and many places will not hire students from this college because of its reputation. Think twice if you plan on going to this school.
This school lacks professionalism on many levels. First they claim to be very strong with their "policies". In reality, they bend those policies when they want to. Someone can miss 2 classes of a course and be placed on academic probation while others can get away with failing an exam. Just depends on whether or not the staff likes you. I understand that sometimes people are given exceptions but they should be within policy and FAIR. I have seen multiple people fail an exam and only one gets an exception. Why did this person get an exception? Because they cried and acted like it was the end of the world. So basically, If you go to Stenberg, it is safe to say that if you act like you're emotionally unstable, depressed and/or suicidal you will most likely get your way. That is if you are liked by the program advisors (If you seem like a sweet, white girl.. that would be you). I just felt like it's unfair for the other ladies in my class who did not get an exception. Nothing wrong with giving exceptions! Just do so fairly. If someone gets an exception from writing an exam, everyone in that class who is in the same situation should be given some sort of exception. So basically, I'm not going to say don't go to stenberg but if you do.. make sure you try to fight against the policies as much as you can. Example: If you're close to passing, fight your way and most likely they'll give it to you. Crying and acting suicidal was a prevalent way to get a "Get out of jail free" card. That being said! I met some great teachers during my time there. They weren't as qualified as teachers usually are but good people anyways. I also got through the course with an over 90% average. I am just concerned about how fair Stenberg really is. I really felt bad for those girls who really tried hard (and maybe english wasn't their first language) but still had to rewrite exams while others (who cried and such) got out of doing rewrites. Basically if you slip and end up failing an exam or course you'll have to deal with admin. Policy says if you fail a final (under 70%) you have the chance to do a rewrite (for a maximum of 70% on the exam). If you fail the rewrite you have to pay Stenberg anywhere from $4,000-$8,000 to redo that course again. if this happens to you.. fight with them for some exception. They have given more rewrites away before and even bumped up peoples grades. I've even heard of them telling people to pretend to write the rewrite so that other students wouldn't be aware of this unfair exceptions. How professional right? What kind of college tells their student to fake-write an rewrite-exam so that other students in the class wont find out that you're getting away with failing an exam. A NOT SO PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL
The honest truth is that there are generally going to be more negative reviews than positive reviews, as people with positive reviews will often not write them. The other honest truth is that the negative reviews should be taken with a grain of salt, as people will be removed from a program and then become fairly vindictive. This institution is pretty much one in three that offers this types of program and there is good and bad to their RDPN program. First, lets note the positive aspects of the program. 1)Upon completion of the RDPN program you will get a diploma and the ability to take the RPN licensing exam which will enable you to work as an RPN (if you pass). 2) There are a number of teachers who are very caring, who desire to teach their curriculum in as interesting a way as possible, and who genuinely care that you comprehend the material. 3) Nearly every clinical instructor that I had was excellent and cared about ensuring we become competent psychiatric nurses. They worked very hard to ensure good relationships with their clinical sites. 4) Its online so if you excel at that kind of learning environment you will enjoy it (I didnt and would have rather had in class learning but still managed to excel). 5) Most of my fellow classmates were awesome. 6) The program is accelerated and you get to work a year sooner than other programs. 7) Unlimited gauze and wound care kits for you. 8) As with most relationships, once the instructors trusted your skills they would relax and work with you, allowing for reasonable things such as extensions, extra credit, or time off. 8) At some point beyond the half way point, you just stop caring about the daily postings because you have mastered APA and realize that some instructors may not even be reading your posts which leads to some very humorous posts. All those good aspects notwithstanding, there were a number of negative components to the program, often in direct relation to the positive aspects. 1)The program alone did not feel sufficient to allow me to pass the entrance exam. There was a lot of extra work that needed to be put in as it felt that there were large gaps in what was being taught and what was sufficient to practice. 2) There was no correspondence by instructors in the course that was designed to prepare students for the exam and there was only one practice exam for the entrance exam in one of the final active courses. The main complaint with the practice exams provided were that they seemed to be very outdated and many students voiced that they felt that the exam seemed more designed to prove to students that they were not ready to take the exam, rather than to help them learn and focus on weak areas. 3) The program was culled (Im not sure what other word to use other than that)(also psychiatric nursing program typically have a large drop-out rate). We lost at least half of the students in the program from start to finish for a variety of reasons. Most students were kicked out of the program for a variety of academic reasons and many of them reported that they felt the process happened very quickly, with little communication on the part of the college, and that there was very little opportunity to argue their cases. 4) Some instructors were frustrating to have, both in online personality and in course delivery methods. 5) Some of the courses felt pointless and could have been replaced with much more vital courses that could have benefitted the skill set of the psychiatric nurse (ex: There was really only one course that taught therapeutic communication skills and one course that taught pharmacology some courses should be removed to allow for those courses to be taught throughout multiple semesters. 6) The program is accelerated and online so it is very easy to get left behind and scrape your way through until a later semester only to find you are unprepared for your duties. 7) It is a private college and it is so very very expensive. They send you small gifts every once in a while but for 40 000 dollars they should have been custom engraved and filled with gold. 8) The college seems to often be in a state of staffing-change, which does not breed confidence. As a result (or perhaps due to other aspects) the colleges communication could only be described as poor. Students often complained of not being aware of policies until it was too late and they were in the process of being removed from the program. 9) They will remove you from the program for many reasons and the process will be quick. 10) They continually advertise the program as being online and allowing for flexibility, however this is only somewhat true as you are penalized for posting late and expected to post at the beginning of the week. They often stated that if posting early was a problem that students could choose to work ahead a week or two so it allowed them to post when needed, however this was rarely possible as most instructors would not open the coursework for the week until the beginning of the week. 11) Their slogan is I changed me and in this program that was definitely true. Unfortunately that will require you going above and beyond what is being taught in order to ensure you become competent. Ultimately, the tldr version is this : If you have 40 000 dollars sitting around, want to work in 2 years instead of 3, are a motivated learner (aka: you dont have a history of slacking, cheating, or making excuses on a continual basis) who likes online learning, and for whatever reason you are not choosing Douglas colleges psych nursing program, this program may be right for you. It is a lot of work and you will be doing a lot of it on your own, however, at the end of two years, if you havent been culled, you will have your diploma.
I had oringally enrolled in the LPN program, very excited due to having a hard time trying to get into any RN program so I figured since they offered night classes I could work during the day and do school at night. At first the people there seems helpful and knowledgeable. I had some concerned regarding funding as I haven't been able to get loans in the past, I brought this concern up to the student adviser who assured me it wouldn't be a problem and I would get funding. She than took a $500 deposit from me. At which I had asked what the refund policy was like again due to fear of lack of funds and some personal health problems that may prevent me from attending school. I was told it wouldn't be a problem and it would be refused. I did not end up getting approved for loans, talked to financial aid who was no help and told me to lie on the application form. I had asked for help in trying to find funding, at which point they said sorry Stendberg does no offer scholarships bursaries nor does the school qualify so I was on my own. After no luck in finding funds I have as to withdraw and asked for my deposit back. It has been a month of arguing and asking to speak to who ever runs the school regarding this matter, I have not gotten my deposit, I have been brushed off and my request to speak to someone I charge has been denied multiple times. I have been treated incredibly poorly. I WOULD NEVER give this institution my money, DO NOT GO HERE!!!!
Worst school ever! Whoever is looking into going to this school. DON'T! This school is only known for eating your money! They don't care if you graduate or not! After 1 bad mark they dismiss you from the school and refer you to a collections agency if you don't pay off what you owe and your credit is ruined for 7 years! They don't understand that people don't have big amounts of money just sitting around! They harass you until you give them their money! The teachers suck and they guarantee that you will get a job! THAT'S THE BIGGEST JOKE! Stenberg college is NOT recognized at any hospital! Stenberg College should be shut down for good because it is a horrible school!
Very disappointed in the lack of professionalism in every person I have been in contact with at this school. Due to my knowledge in the industry I have been harassed by teachers, and staff have only been able to give run around. I have self taught 90% or more of this course and feel that they need to re look at their curriculum. They do not give you accurate programs to be hired on to major school districts and blame other factors, it is never their fault. A waste of time, and a waste of student loans.
Teachers were great but high turn over in administration staff. Unprofessional - lost documents, schedules changed abruptly with little notice several times - imagine that with a work schedule or your childrens childcare schedule! Staff are late for appointments and I know hard to believe - honestly do NOT even reply to your emails. I would not recommend unless they are offering something you need that no other college offers. They are VERY expensive.
"The Cardiology Technology distance program at Stenberg College has been a great success for me as I am currently working casual at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba as a Cardiology Technician. I have found with the lab work it has given me the confidence to perform professionally and efficiently in a hospital setting. When I first started this program, I never really knew what I wanted to do as professional careers but I knew I wanted to work in the healthcare setting. I never knew much about this course/profession and once I began taking the courses I loved it. Focusing specifically and directly on the profession and your duties as a cardiologist technician during each course has kept me motivated and excited to learn more. Stenberg College Cardiology Technician program has prepared me greatly for the workforce. Every time someone asks me about my program I am always excited to explain the program and the profession to them. I have had many people who have asked me about this program and have mentioned that it is distance and their first response is ""oh really, your not doing any hands on?"". I always am excited to explain how great this program has prepared me to work as a casual tech currently and that this program is not like many as it has made me become organized, proficient, professional and gain time management skills greatly. I always am excited to mention the online theory has prepared me for the labs that we have to do hands on. Having that discipline that this program has taught me to have during theory components has greatly improved my performance in lab as I am prepared and have the professional skills to perform as a Cardiology Technician. Not only did the program change me as a professional student/Cardiology Technician, the instructors have motivated me and showed that finding that special thing that will keep you motivated during the course can greatly help. The instructors have taught me to respond professional to students and instructors through writing weekly forums and communicating online to everyone. That special thing that I have noticed during the course that has changed me was when I at anytime feeling stressed I find a youtube motivational speech and put it on, to know that I could do this. With this in mind, I have become more positive in performing my duties and have lowered my negativity against myself not only through school but as a person, for example as a competitive premier women's soccer goalkeeper, I have always been negative on myself as I blamed myself for any goals that went in and noticing staying positive and confident has been two great skills I have been developing through this course and I have shown a great improvement in both."
Worst place to ever go too. Stenberg might seem like a friendly nice school but trust me it's not its the worst. Teachers don't care about you they watch soap operas on the computer and do online shopping and then pretty much you have to be self taught. Student services are the worst to go to they never have an answer to anything they just babble away on stuff that is irrelevant. This school just wants your money BE AWARE and if you withdraw or get dismissed it's unsure of when they will get you back in that's how bad this school is
- I overall had a pretty positive experience with Stenberg - Many of the instructors were effective and very helpful (besides maybe one in particular) - Ended up landing a job after graduation which was a huge positive - I feel that either some people just didn't put in the required work and/or didn't get the required assistance when they needed it - These instructors could communicate while having a background in the field too. That's what I liked the most.
