"The English department at Western Washington University sports some of the most talented professors and faculty on the planet. Like most schools, the farther you go in the program, the more personalized the experience becomes, and this is extremely valuable when it comes to the Creative Writing program. The work is meaningful and enlightening, and you're sure to graduate with a better understanding of the world around you and how literature and writing fits into it."

"Western is a great school in a great location! As a liberal arts school I enjoyed taking a variety of different GUR classes as well as the classes for my major. In general I had professors who were passionate about what they taught and cared about students learning. If you are an outdoorsy person Northwest Washington is a great place to live."

"I went to Western for three years after transferring with my AA. The instructors in thr Kinesiology department were extremely knowledgeable in their field and almost all of them were conducting research in which students could participant in as an undergraduate. The classes were diverse and gave me a deep understanding in the workings of the human body as it relates to exercise and nutrition. I found that Western was full of a variety of activities and were extremely helpful with financial aid. I plan on going to graduate school for nutrition and feel as though Western's program not only prepared me for grad school but expanded my way of thinking and taught me how to be a working professional. The kinesiology programs require more community service than most schools I've seen and I have found that to be incredibly helpful in finding employment and understanding how to apply my knowledge. I recommend Western to any student wanting a well rounded education surrounded by good teachers ans friendly students."

"Westerns graduate program is great for students who want hands on, real life experience. I am in the Mental Health Counseling Program and we are already seeing real clients (It is the second quarter of my first year). Honestly, no complaints from me. I very happy in this program."

  • Degree: Music
"In my field of study, music performance, the degree is not as important as the experiences required to graduate. Every day of my career has benefited from large and small details learned during those four years, thanks to what was a thriving department at the time. Sadly, that is no longer the case at WWU, which is why I chose not to recommend the school in the survey. In choosing a music school, an incoming freshman would be wise to strike a balance between one with a great reputation and one whose size and accessibility allow many ensemble playing opportunities. High powered schools are most helpful to the more experienced students."

"Western Washington University has a small graduate program offering only a master's degree. It is a close-knit community, and because of that you receive a large amount of hands-on experience in your field. Unlike other graduate programs where you may be assisting current PHD students, Western allows you to perform your own research."

"I would recommend Western Washington University. I liked the size and location of the school as well as the fact that it was in a small liberal community and did not have a Greek system. However, I wouldn't get the same degree again. There are no jobs in Cultural Anthropology. I planned on graduating with a degree in something I enjoyed and relying on my previous work experience to advance my career. When I decided to switch career tracks I wished I had gotten a more practical degree. Don't get a humanities degree unless you plan to get your master's degree."

"Small school means fewer resources, but a more tight-knight graduate community. Also means almost everyone works as a TA, and the teaching load is big. No PhD program means MS students get more attention from faculty, and get flexibility in designing their own projects, but conversely projects can be more difficult to figure out and less "cookie cutter"."

"The chemistry graduate program at Western Washington University is incredible. The chemistry program itself is very well known for its undergraduate research opportunities. The majority of undergraduate researchers go on to earn their Ph.D., but a few each year stay at Western to pursue their master's degree. Having a master's degree at Western will help you get a job upon graduating, or prepare you to move onto a Ph.D. program at basically any school in the country. The pro's if this program are the great professors available to work for, the sense of community in the chemistry department, everyone knows everyone, and the variety of choices available for research. Their are very few cons to this department. If you are looking for a large chemistry department, you may want to look elsewhere. Western has approximately 40-50 undergraduate researchers and about 10 graduate students working towards their master's degree. All together, it is a very great school and I am extremely happy with my choice of going here."

"It's not too hard to get a TA position, and the salary works well, as long as you look for a well-priced place to live. Bellingham is somewhat expensive, though I'm told it's cheaper than Seattle. There's plenty of things to do downtown, and the surrounding area offers lots of outdoor recreation (skiing, camping, hiking, boating, you name it!). The rec center is great, and has a large rock-climbing wall. People are very nice and understand, but the professors will push you to succeed. It takes some extra work when adjusting to teaching duties, but after a quarter or two the work comes down to about what they estimate it should be. Some labs have bigger grading loads though. They try to keep you teaching the same lab, if they can. There is a wide variety of specializations in the faculty."
