Capella University Reviews

I started my masters here, then quickly realized I did not care for the mentality at the school. I transferred on after 4 courses and a 4.0, because I felt like I was just a number. Instructors were rigid and took days to answer me. The online modules did not work properly, and their were no outlines. I felt as though I was writing just for a grade and not learning. Several times I had to email instructors and stress the syllabus. Upon moving on there was a night and day difference at the new school.
I completed my Master's degree in Business Administration from Capella University and support them 100%. I have recommended Capella to my peers and had several of them apply based on my recommendation. I was a single parent while pursuing my degree and received support throughout the process from my instructors, advisors, and administrative team. When I decided to pursue my doctoral degree, I chose another university based on price and it was a terrible decision. I left and came back to Capella and couldn't be happier!!
The school feeds you with a guided path and help along the way to achieving your degree. The only help Capella provides is when they sign you up for loans that you don't even know you're agreeing to, which once you enroll you can't withdraw from class, they will say you can but keep you in the class to keep your financial aid money. When you ask about it they say they withdrew you, but you will have an F on transcript and they will say they had to grade the work at the time you withdrew on the whole course scale so they can get your financial aid money. I would put this online school below university of Phoenix, not only for the poor class and business office experience, but also the professors have no clue what they're doing either and generally send out pre-typed automated emails concerning the class or your questions. Online universities, actually they don't deserve that name, any online 'money-mill' not associated with a 'real' university or school, PLEASE STAY AWAY. Keep your money, credit score, and stress free from the bull, a university like this will entangle you with. Any questions or help on how or why to stay away, please email me.
I went to Capella for my masters and then transferred into the Ph.D program. The Ph.D program started out great, no real issues. All the issues started with the comprehensive exam. I attended the required residency weekends which was supposed to prepare you for comps and milestones 1 to 3. Three weeks before comps started Capella emailed my the comprehensive exam manual, however when the course room open up there was a different manual. The new manual was the opposite of the one that was sent to me. Under the old manual you had to the end of week 2 to get your questions, which I was planning to do as I had to go for foot surgery. However, under the new manual you had to get questions no later than Monday of week 2. This 2 days before I went for surgery. I emailed the dissertation advisor and as the manual said that in situations like medical an extension would be granted. However, Capella did not want to work with me. I ended up having complications and was not home until Thursday, which eat up most of the first week. I passed one of the questions and got rewrites on 2. The grades feedback was made no sense. I was told in one part that something was right and than the next sentence said it was wrong. I turned in the rewrites on time, and they were supposed to have a grade it within 7 days. I ended up waiting another 3 weeks before I found out I did not pass. The new grading system is terrible. You need all proficient/ distinguish to pass the exam on all criteria and if one of the grades gave you something that was not proficient you failed. Under the old system all you needed was 30 points per question which you could get 20 points on just APA alone. With this in mind I was sure I was going to have no problem. However, my cohort was the first group under the new grading criteria and after speaking to students most of us did not pass. It seemed like they were just failing students. I took their writing class and the instructor went over the results from comps, by looking at our papers and I was told my responses were passing and the instructor could not find the problems even with the feedback that I was given. This set-off alarms for me. It was then I found out that the only thing Capella cares about is how much money they can get from the students. I also requested being moved to the DPA program and I requested made that request after I failed the rewrites, but the advisor never processed the degree program change request until it was too late, so I was going to be stuck in writing classes wasting time and money. I ended up transferring to another school.
Some individuals have good thoughts about their Capella journey ;and others have shared not so good experiences. As for myself, I have no regrets. The institution was just what I expected in meeting, and in some cases, exceeding my expectations. I do believe, it is each student's responsibility to make sure he/she perform their "due diligence" particularly when it comes to a financial investment such as higher education. For those expressing both positive and negative reviews, I do understand because it is reviews and concerns such as yours that can potential result in the betterment of the institution. Best of luck in your pursuit of your educational goals; whether, you are attending Capella or some other university.
Please, please DO NOT waste your time on money on this school. I have several other college degrees and have NEVER had the problems I've experienced with this school. There is NO preparation or guidance for the doctoral project and each instructor has a different idea of what it entails. My instructors kept changing too, mid-project and then I'd be with someone unfamiliar with my project. I started my project over four times and this required many extra quarters of work....but of course if they keep you in school, the school makes more money. The financial office could never get my account right either. I would NEVER, EVER recommend this school to anyone. Run, do not walk, away from this school.
The three and half years I studied at Capella University were some of the most informative years in my academic career. I was already an established and busy surgeon in my country, but I felt I needed that extra challenge to add a PhD to my medical qualifications. It was not easy spending those nights working on the weekly course assignments, but it was all worth the effort. I fully enjoyed the structured online course work offered at Capella. Since, graduation I have published not less than six papers adapted from my course projects in per reviewed journal sometimes in collaboration with former course instructors. I would recommend this university only to serious graduate students who are ready to work hard and complete on time. Otherwise you could get frustrated and end up blaming the university for your shortcomings. Online courses are in fact be more demanding than full time college studies.
I was excited to pursue my degree. However now I am feeling like a bad choice. The first semester they woo you in initial they seemed to work with an employed person assignment due in a reasonable time during the week and responses by Sunday. As the time went on an increase of reading material averaging 60-100 pages not to mention reviews of articles and now assignments are due Wednesdays. Out of my five professors I actually had one professor who provided guidance. Often times glitches from their end so they say glitches from your end if you ask me its a way for you to fail a class so the price they quoted you on a degree extend as they stop grading so you can fail your class I actually had to start taking pictures when I submitted my work. This semester may be the one that broke the camel's back as I ca not gain access to the necessary tools. Oh lets not forget about the alleged tutoring they offer. Its been two semesters and I am still waiting. My advice I can not say that all online school s are like this but I can say Capella its not ahead of the game. Now I have to find a good lawyer because I took a loan for this school. Also they charged me last semester for a course for this semester before I registered. Run!
I feel anyone should re-think taking the Flex Path Program. I work full-time Project Manager and had completed all 3 my assessments and the last one I was in progress and I had gotten really ill was unable to submit by the deadline date. So, therefore, they withdraw me from the school. I felt all this was unfair. I had turned in all my assignments with a Proficient score.
I was enrolled into the DNP program for one quarter and a few weeks of the second quarter. I was told I would get a scholarship and I took out a financial aid loan. I was billed 2,600 for the first quarter. I never saw my scholarship applied. I was not told it did not take effect until the second semester. Also I was asked by one of your enrollment counselors if I could use my 2nd quarter refund to pay for the first quarter. I was not told why but I agreed as long as I wouldn't owe a balance. I got turned over to collections for 4,596. Because transferring funds across aid years is not permissible and I was not told that. B.R.was the person whom I spoke to about this and I have a copy of the original email. Yes I withdrew from the college during my second quarter. I was not active in the course due to having surgery moving states changing jobs and a major health crisis with my parents and got removed for inactivity. I was expecting a $900 or so withdrawal pay back but not this. I have no way of paying this and now my credit is ruined because I was trying to better my life. Your staff is ill informed and misinforms it's students. I will never recommend your program to anyone. If I had known that my scholarship didn't activate until the second quarter I never would have enrolled in the first place. Poor communication. Worst university I ever attended! I will be sure to make this as public as I can!!! Thank you all for a waste of my time and for destroying my credit. I was enrolled under false pretenses!
