Student & Graduate Reviews

Graduation Year: 1998
"I obtained my MS in Business / Organizational Management from Capella (started when it was the Graduate School of America) and every course I took involved written projects or papers. Program was well structured and followed my degree plan. You will learn how to wright APA style and instructors were good. Like most things in life you get out of the program what you put into the program. Only negative is high tuition but comparable with many other on-line schools.Definitely not a degree mill, you will earn the degree through documented work, so if you are looking to buy a degree this is not the school for you."

"I'm very pleased with Capella. I'm currently on my 2nd quarter and it's moving along very well. The overall process was smooth, from the application to my class start date. Please keep an open mind when reviewing schools as every situation is different, start by speaking with an admission representative. The course load if duable, however you need to stay focused and current on all assingments, do not fall behind. Check if your employer is an alliance partner!"

Degree: Human Services

"I was in the Phd Program in human services. I had finished everything but my research to complete the Phd, but the last course I took - in professional counseling for personal enhancement as I felt it would help me professionally - and turned in my final paper on time - but the instructor said she didn't get it and gave me an F. She lied, not me, but I had no recourse and they still have me down for owing $3600 for the course.I wasn't real pleased with the quality, but also not displeased. Not perfect, but that's okay I can deal with that. But what got me is they seriously abandoned me. I got ill, I had a long misdiagnosed illness that festered until it got too bad and changed my life. I took a break. Their office called me, told me they would take care of the student loan issue (I couldn't take a class at the time due to the illness) and deferment due to illness. Then another financial lady emailed and said "we don't do that." and acted like I WAS THE ONE who initiated it. It was them. She was rude, hateful, and basically after that I NEVER heard from them again. I left messages, I emailed, I have done everything maybe 10 times in 2-3 years and NEVER EVER heard from them again. I asked for help making things right and finishing. I explained my illness again. And to date I have NEVER heard from them again. They just kissed me off completely. I guess if they feel you owe something you are no good to them. Sad. Likely why a school like that gets so many foreign students - they aren't wise enough or familiar with the US education system to know better. They are THE most expensive and set the tuition to match the financial aid as they know what you will get. My tuition was raised every single year I was there, so buyer beware. I teach college as a professor elsewhere as my primary occupation(I am a physician assistant and no stranger to graduate education) so I am an insider to the system. I don't think the education is horrible. They have regional accreditation which is the top, and in some ways I was so close so I am a little sad. With the illness it just added insult to injury. I have decided since they will not talk to me to have to let it go and I will now get a Phd in psych and become a psychologist."

"I have been a long term student at Capella, and though I am much poorer, I am no where closer to obtaining a job in a new career. I have a very high grade average and have received no professor complaints about my work. The staff is inconsistent- some very very good, some mediocre, and some blatantly absent from the course room.Dissent is met with threats to be kicked out (thereby losing your money which they keep). I have found the staff to be unprofessional and downright petty. That said, there are some exceptional professors there and these problems may just be in the program I am in and not others."

"I paid an excessive amount of money to receive a mediocre educational experience and a degree that is worthless in professional circles. I never took an exam that wasn't "open book" and I didn't even complete a thesis to receive my MA. They accept EVERY ONE because they are FOR PROFIT."

"I completed both my Undergraduate and my Graduate studies at Capella. I am extremely pleased with the quality of the education."

"There are many ways for a profit organization to make money and milking students out of as much financial aid as possible should not be one of them. This university will procrastinate and stall you out as much as possible to tack on more semesters. I am in my dissertation phase. The proposal part of this process has been redone since I began and I have no idea if it is better than it was but it does not work the way they are having me do this.Everyone(professors and SOE) approved my proposal for two years and had me work on it and get every speck of information and all the forms filled outto say no cannot be done during the IRB stage. How a university can direct you to do one thing then have another section say oh no no can not do that but you can rewrite it and pay us more. What to do it all over again and get turned down again?Teachers are awesome, caring, and are not part of the process that messes you up, they bend over backwards to help you but they are stuck themselves! I would say do NOT attend this university. Sorry Capella, I was an advocate but not anymore, I will tell all to stay away from your university on every site I can find."

"Go to real school before you waste your time and money with a business that cares nothing about your success. I have been at Capella for 3 and I wish every day that I did not chose this school. Beware and find a school where if you need to go there you can."

"I have always had issues with Capella. They had me enroll right away mid semester when I wanted to wait. Becasue I enrolled when I advisor told me to, I was not aware this would affect my financial aid.To make things worse, the staff is very slow in responding but quick to enroll. They get back on their own time regardless of what your situation is.I always have billing issues, grants get less and less. More subsidized loans than anything. No extra help with my resume. Instead, an email notifying me she recieved it, then just nothing..No help with employment either."

"Capella offers a great education. However, the infrastructure strikes me as fraudulent. I am a current student and have become friends with many other students and have realized that we all have the same complaints: The MFT program claims it is 2.5-3 years. IT IS NOT, they tack time onto your academic plan and everyone I have spoken to (30+people) report now having 4 year plans, going full time.Furthermore, financial aid reps and academic advisors are awful. You may luck out and get a good one, but generally none are assigned to you so it is the luck of who answers the phone. They have no idea what they are talking about and dont care. Robel is argumentative. They do not place your internships, and it is NOT EASY finding one. Beware.Teachers are for the most part excellent."
