DeVry University

I know some of you probably had bad experience with Devry u but that doesn't mean that the school is totally a waist.Tuition is high at devry u. But I was even told the cost and everything up front and that wasn't enough to scare me awayI knew that their will be great benefit after graduation. I would recommend this to all: even if u dont like your school at least finish what you are doing.Dropping out will not get you nowhere. But devry has gone well with me I am pursuing my b.a in network and communications management and they have accepted my previous credits from a school that wasn't even accredited anymore(high tech Institute) everything is easy and convient for me especially with the online programs. But this is my experience and I would recommend it. My girlfriend loves the school as well.Some of the remarks that are made about devry seems like that people didn't know what they wantd to do with their careers or just some are lazy.Some schools have the strengths and weakness and I devry is very strong foundation school that is regionally accredited and that will be recognize by any other school or employer in the land.

If you need someone to hold your hand and treat you like a toddler while in school, then Devry is absolutely not for you. I have been at Devry for four semesters now and I don't have anything negative to say. In some classes I have met students who worked at Microsoft and Boeing. To the best of my knowledge I am pretty sure that the people who teachers the subjects there are professionals in their fields so they are able to really provide first hand knowledge on a subject. At a course home page under the "Student Resources" tab all you have to do is click it and it will take you to your personal account where your financial aid, student loans, grades, and all other pertinent information relating to you is located. The classes at Devry are rigorous and you do have to work very hard to maintain a good grade (lots of reading and writing) A nice thing I also like about Devry is the job fairs they host about twice a year. And so for the people who claim that Devry is a joke, just admit you are disgruntled and I am sorry your experience was not as favorable as mine.

I haven't been attending class here for very long, but I do know that it is not as laid back and social as regular schools. Classes are very fast, they just want you to get your degree quickly. So far the environment has not been very conducive to socializing very much, so there aren't many opportunities to pick up hot chicks. I'm pretty sure there is a plus-sized girl in my algebra class who wants it, but that seems to be the only one.

A degree from any college will not teach you everything you need to know to succeed. You can't sit back and let a degree do all your work to get a job, if you can't sell yourself you can't sell yourself, unless you went to Harvard. Harvard degrees will probably sell you pretty good.

A degree means you took time to apply yourself to something and had the self discipline to complete a long task. A degree doesn't mean you are automatically a well experienced person who should get any job he wants. A degree doesn't automatically mean you are smart.

I started Devry this past March 2009. The registrars office at the New York Campus is horrible. They are over worked and have very little experience. I hear that the financial aid office is just as bad.

As far as the classes and instructors go, this is the only positive. All of my instructors so far have been very helpful. I take 1 or 2 classes a semester and when you work 10 hours a day its not easy to come home and do homework. Tons of reading. At least 4 chapters a week, a weekly quiz and homework. Finals are timed they usually give you 3.5 hours. So far the only final that was not timed was my Algebra class.

I see that most of the complaints are about money. Yes Devry is very expensive but all private schools charge the same tuition. Some schools charge over $600 per credit. I am paying 50% and my company pays the other 50% so I did not have to deal with the Financial Aid nightmare.

I entered DeVry in the summer of 2002 with the intention of finishing within 18 months. I have a significant amount of technical background and wanted to test out of the majority of the technical requirements. The recruiters assured me that there would be no problem with this plan and the tests would be available as soon as I wanted them. This was lie #1. After a semester, I was informed that I couldn't take the test for a course until it had been taught at the Ft. Washington location. Semesters... Read More passed and, after numerous requests, I finally began to get tests. This was after a full year had passed. Meanwhile, they gradually introduced the idea of working in group projects which was total BS. They claim that somehow you can get a good grade if some lamebrain in your group doesn't fulfill their end of the project. Another lie. So after struggling to complete the battery of tests and 6 years later, the financial aide people decide to join the fracas. They claim - in November - that "computer problems" are holding up the March and July financial aid distributions. This comes from a university teaching computer engineering and business administration. Ok, so I am crippled by financial hardship because of the lack of financial aid and have to withdraw from a class. Then they deny me the financial aid from July because I don't have sufficient credits in February; Credits I would have successfully completed if I had the financial aid back in July. OK, so now the end is close - after 7 years - nearly done. But no, you have to do on line classes. What a joke. They are not classes on line but discussions about whatever the subject might be. How do you discuss differential equations? Add to that the "students" use the discussion threads to spout their particular brands of racism, ignorance, and intolerance like its their own private blog. The instruction is non-existent on-line and overall it's just a waste of time and money. Do yourself a big favor and go to a community college. DeVry is a glorified tech school and the degree and education you get is of dubious value. For me it was seven years wasted for no good purpose.

The advisors are very good at making you think that starting classes with them and them only is the best decision you will ever make in life.I recently enrolled for classes with Devry online. To start with, the enrollment process is that of pulling teeth. Faxing this and that, emailing sensitive documents,and receiving numerous calls from different departments of the program is what you should expect.

By then, I was already enrolled and awaiting the student loans to go through. I found out it was a whopping $535 per credit hour! Unbelievable right? So for the two "introductory classes", it was close to $1500. The semester had not started so I decided that this was not the program for me. I told them I changed my mind and thats when the sales pitches started to play. I then thought, ANY SCHOOL THAT BEGS YOU TO STAY WITH THEM, can't be good news. They tried everything! I was transferred to THREE DIFFERENT "DIRECTORS OF DEVRY" that told me I was making a huge mistake. I stood my ground. They told me that they would withdraw me before the student loans came through. Two weeks passed by and I was curious if they had actually withdrew me from the school, so i called. I explained to one of the admissions officers my situation only for her to have told me that nothing had been done and nobody did what they said they would do. At this point, I'm thinking they are trying to take the money and run. Luckily, I never logged in to the classes online. They were about to receive $3000 dollars from the loan company. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS CRAP TO ANYONE. Really think if this is something you want to do.

Oh, and if you do the research, the graduation rate of students that attend this program is only 33%. MAKE SURE YOU RESEARCH!

Ok I have been going to DeVry now for over a year online as where I live is a rural area and the colleges here do not offer my degree, I am also a full time wife and mother so I cannot commute or move.

So far in the past year or so Financial Aid had lost my paperwork a total of 20 times. Each session I get to verify again, this takes them weeks to do we are now going into week 7 and they have lost everything again that I sent them four weeks prior to classes starting. They wont tell you anything, they have no idea where my paperwork went they can see where they received it but no one can tell me what happened to it. I resubmit it by fax and by email and they get it a week later it still has not been sent over for processing, I have a class starting in just over a week and am being told because they screwed up I may have to pay for not only the class I am in now but the class coming up. No way in hell am I paying for that when my student loan more than covers it by over 1000. The classes are great they are quick and easy so far at least to me. However, their financial department is the worst I have ever seen. These idiots have no idea what they are doing, I wonder how they even got their jobs. I actually had to add some figures up for one of the financial aid employees because she could not figure out how things all added up so I went over it with her step by step when I was done she understood my figures and agreed they all made sense. If they do not fix their financial department i have a feeling they will loose a lot more students. Go to Devry if you want to live in a nightmare if not then stay away.

I personally LOVE DeVry. I am a "Non-Traditional" student, that is, I am 41, married, have a full time job and a family. DeVry online allows me the flexibility to attend class on my schedule. You still have to follow the class pace which is quite fast (16 weeks compressed into 8). You must do a lot of work and it is not easy. This is, after all, University-level work. My experience in DeVry was good. Since I hate semester length classes, DeVry offers classes due in 8 weeks which is pretty good length for me. When I have questions, I email to professor and they answered me in a timely matter; since English is my second language so typing is better than speaking to me (they usually provide their phone number too).

However, the technical support team in DeVry is quite slow. They reply my mail in a week. Which is already 1/8 length for the class. Moreover, I hate the... Devry works for me. I was out of school for almost 12 years before getting back into it. My overall experience with Devry is very good. I'm taking online classes as well as going to the institution twice a week. I've experienced problems with brick and motar schools who made mistakes on my financial aid and class schedule. I attended Devry back in the summer of 2007. After a couple of semesters of working extremely hard to maintain a good grade I received a letter from Devry explaining that the financial aid could not cover all the cost of my tuition so I should take out a private loan for the remainder of $1,500.00 for the first two semesters. When I was finally able to speak to the Corporate office Rep at the Illinois office, she was nothing but rude on the phone and would not let me get in a word. She threatened to hang up on me because I kept insisting that she listen to my story. I've been wrestling with this for almost 2 years now and now I'm getting calls from the collection agency. I explained to the agency that I've been trying to get this resolved for a long time now but cannot get any of my calls returned. I've been calling every day for the past week and leaving messages but cannot get anyone to return my calls. I am so disappointed in Devry and I will never recommend them to anyone because it is such a hassle to deal with anyone.

I too tried Devry University here in San Diego for a single semester. At their recommendation, they started me part time in a single math class, (they claimed they like to start all new students out slowly). At first it seemed O.K. But in the second week the finance manager came to me and said that I only qualified for part time financial aid and therefore if I wanted to go to Devry full time I would have to pay some $2000.+ in cash each semester, over and above the $3750. they were receiving from... When the bills start arriving in my second week of class, I knew the writing was on the wall. I was billed over $5000 for a single math course! When I approached the finance people at my local campus about this they claimed that I had been overcharged and upon looking into the accounting system, they assured me that everything would be straightened out in the end, and I would get a large credit or direct refund.

I finished that semester but with open book/un-timed midterms and final exams that you could take from home, starting and stopping at your leisure; it became obvious to me that Devry is nothing more than a paper mill. If you are stupid and cannot get through real school at your regular university or community college then I suppose you have no choice but to pay Devry over $100,000. for a worthless piece of paper they call a degree. But if you have a single ounce of brains in your head then you will see them for what they are and instead, go to a real college.

There is no easy way to earn a legitimate college degree. A Devry degree might be helpful if all that you desire is to move up in your present company. But when you go out into the open job market armed with your Devry degree, then you will see where the weakness lies. A candidate with a legitimate degree from a university like SDSU or UCSD will get the job over a Devry candidate every time.

I must say that I am truly upset with Devry's finance department. I have been waiting for over two months for my funds to be disbursed and applied to my account. I can not remember how many times I have called their 1800 number to get this problem fixed, and to top things off when I did call I would get different answers from different reps. Like, for example one rep told me that my funds would disburse the following week, it never did, another told me that I would have my refund check and that the... Read More funds would disburse before the following session would begin, and I am still waiting, and another told me that there was something wrong with their system and the process was moving slow. It is very frustrating when you do not have a definite answer, I would just prefer them to tell me that they didn't know instead of lying to me just to get me off the phone. I have to say I don't see anything wrong with the class. But administration is killing me.

I opted to take out a student loan to cover the tuition expense, and I asked for an additional amount to cover related expenses.

My class started 9/2. That week, I began calling Fin Aid to check in and make sure things were going smoothly. I called three times between 9/2 and 9/23, and was told each time that my loan would disburse between week 2 and week 5.

On 9/23 I was told the same, and indicated to the rep... Read More that it was the middle of week four, and I was getting concerned. The rep put me on hold, then came back and told me that my loan had been denied by the lender back on 9/2. Apparently nobody bothered to look before that!!

I called the lender and was told that two sets of paperwork were submitted through the FinAid office. One said my school was Keller, the other said it was DeVry. I explained that Keller is a part of DeVry, and the lender released my funds. Funds were disbursed last Thursday by the lender.

I called DeVry after learning that the funds were disbursed, and a rep from FinAid confirmed it. The rep said that I would have a refund in about 14 days, and my bill was covered. He gave me a dollar amount on what would be left over.

Yesterday, after watching for a week and seeing nothing post to my account, I called again. The funds were received by DeVry, but are FROZEN. The school has frozen those funds because the bank sent more than the school asked for. So the school now has the money, my bill is still not paid, I'm past due, and I'm now on registration hold because of nonpayment.

The rep passed me to an 'escalation desk,' where the woman I spoke to said she would escalate my issue and I should have an answer by Wednesday. But they have to send the funds back. And the refund amount the rep from the week before gave me dropped by almost $1000.

So my bill is still not paid, the money the school received is going back to the bank, and on top of that, I won't have an answer on what to do next until the middle of week six. Week six of eight.

I tried to contact my admissions rep for further assistance, and then the supervisor whose name he gave me. I left messages and did not hear back.

I'm just beyond disgusted! I want to continue taking classes. But after this mess, it won't be here. I don't have time to fight with the financial aid department to get my bill paid.

I read another review on here that I have to agree with. The financial aid office and price is beginning to be the deal breaker for me. My only problem with the school is how slow the multi-department financial processing is. It is fine it goes through different offices, but still not having a students private loan disbursed after a request was put in five weeks ago is unacceptable. I'm looking to transfer mostly because of the financial aid office and tuition. It keeps going up in a hurting economy for no reason and is already overpriced. I can honestly only recommend DeVry as a temporary school option to attend if you are in certain living circumstances where you can't attend a better school (online or not).

You also get out of the classes what you put in. I've learned a lot from some of the core classes just from putting time into them when other classes really don't require much effort, so you never really learn much, but that is part of personal discipline when attending an on-line school.

I think that the class setup is really good, if you have a competent instructor. I had a good instructor and an instructor from hell last term. The bad one wanted everyone to already know the material. Most of us were at a loss. I didnt know that i could have withdrawn if i did i would have because i failed her class. 98% percent in one class 54% in the other. Something is wrong with that picture.

It is very expensive also. So if you are looking to enroll look at no less than $1200 for 2 credit hrs.... Read More Make sure you get your moneys worth. The financial aid system is screwed up this term. Most don't even have awards or know if they are covered. I know i am trying to get my moneys worth because i have a feeling it will be out of pocket and my FAFSA EFC was 0.

I dont know whats going on in that department but its something. I will not attend again. I can go to community college and take 4 credit hrs for the price of 1 with them. Its currently $540 a credit hr and they go up every July. You pay for online access and there is a BS $40 for Supplies that you don't receive and no one has an explanation for. Research is what i recommend. Sorry im doing it now instead of sooner.
