I enjoyed my undergraduate program, however I had a little different circumstances with it. I started school by going for nursing, so I had to switch into studio art after a year and a half. Because of this, getting my credits was slightly different than the average art student. I like having studios for every medium, and the support that professors gave me was very helpful.
College is a business first. No university or college will give you the golden ticket to a great job. It is YOUR responsibility to best increase your chances at getting a career and working to better your level of professionalism. Florida State University is a great school, don't get me wrong. There are many great higher learning institutions but you as an individual have to put in the time and the effort to make yourself more desirable in the market.
I graduated in the fall of 2016, with my major in Editing, Writing, and Media. I will say that the instructors I had during my time were excellent. They cared for their students and were willing to extend any help in order to achieve individual success. Overall, the courses for my major were pretty vague and often the descriptions were misleading of the actual nature of the course. While I love writing, I believe the EWM track at FSU is better as a secondary major (even minor) rather than a primary. The requirements are very short, and the courses you can choose from are somewhat limiting, and often times the ones that seemed most intriguing were never offered or always filled due to such limited availability. If i were to give any advice, it's to look into the communication's programs because they often incorporate similar content to EWM, expect much more applicable to future career opportunities!
During my time at Florida State I found the teachers were very philosophical and not very practical. I also felt that the University was very detached from each other and it made it difficult to complete anything in their offices. Overall my experience was good, but I felt I could've been trained better to perform my duties as a teacher.
Wonderful program for individuals eager to learn the studio business and how the film industry operates. The program is mostly Hands-on. Everyone is expected to collaborate and work professionally in their respected jobs on and off set. High stress environment, ability to multitask is a must, and fast paced learning will help you to thrive in the program.
