"I have a nursing background and have always wanted to pursue my master's degree. Georgia State University has a great public health program. Its centrality in Atlanta gives it unique access to students at the university. Emory, the Centers for Disease Control and the American Cancer Society are close to the school. The teachers really want you to do well and are very supportive. However, the only form of financial aid graduate students receive are loans. I applied for a graduate student assistant position but I did not receive it. I already have loans from my undergraduate program and would appreciate any assistance."

"The Master of Public Administration program at Georgia State University is a high quality program given that the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies is highly ranked and the great majority of MPA graduates are employed relatively quickly. My experience thus far has been positive. It is a night program designed for working professionals, which does have disadvantages. Although I have not personally experienced any threats to my safety, going to campus in downtown Atlanta at night can lead to run-ins with some interesting characters. Also, it is difficult to feel like part of a cohort when the majority of students, like myself, show up to campus after a long day of work at 7:30 PM and leave at 10:00 PM wanting nothing more than to go home and pass out. However, the benefits far outweigh the cons. The workload is manageable; I work 30 hours a week and am a full-time student. I have found professors to not only be knowledgeable but some of the top researchers in their fields that are also readily available to meet with students. Finally, Career Services is incredibly helpful by means of workshops, individual meetings, and listservs/databases informing students of often unlisted job opportunities. Overall, I give it two thumbs up!"

"Georgia State University has an excellent Graduate Biology program. The information and classes provided are exceptional. Georgia State University is located in downtown Atlanta, Georgia which can pose a challenge at times. Traffic is horrible. I was a commuter, so I spent much of my time traveling to and from campus. Furthermore, housing is expensive in Atlanta, Georgia. However, Georgia State University is a leading research school with affordable classes in comparison to other graduate programs. Furthermore, you can receive teaching assistants to help with the cost of tuition."

"I think Georgia State has an excellent Spanish program. Although it is quite small, you really connect with the professors and fellow students and it creates a great atmosphere for making the most of your education. You will never feel like just another student lost in the crowd in this program. The courses are very interesting, and all of the professors are extremely helpful, insightful, and knowledgable. I would definitely recommend this University´s program."

"It is overall amazing. The people, access to equipment, access to information are all amazing. It is a bit too by the book and competition oriented for my liking. But, biology has turned into a bit of a rat race given limited funds for research so competition must exist everywhere in academic biology."

"My graduate program is very unique due to the location of the school. Georgia State University is located in downtown Atlanta; therefore, the school is a non-traditional campus. The buildings are all over downtown, which allows students to experience real life before they graduate. The faculty associated with my program are extremely knowledgeable, world-renowned professionals who are always available to assist us whenever we need it. The workload is realistic but challenging. I absolutely love it."

"The Neuroscience Program at GSU is highly competitive and allows me to interact with distinguished faculty. The only con is that GSU's student fees are too high."

"My favorite part about the College of Law at Georgia State University is the teachers. The professors are very invested in the growth of their students and have a wonderful way of communicating the subjects that they are obviously passionate about. GSU is located in downtown Atlanta which provides ample opportunity to get involved in a busy legal community. While the downtown location can help students create productive networks it also has a reputation for not being the safest campus. Being a younger woman, I am often nervous while walking to my car late at night, but the campus police do a wonderful job with providing a presences that make nervous individuals like myself feel more safe."

"Campus protection was lacking, one too many incident were student were getting robbed by non-student visitors. There was no transportation to local stores for grocery and the cost of paying for parking was highly expensive compared to other universities both local and not."

"I wish that the university would make the program more rigorous through research and applied coursework such as a capstone project or internship. However, I appreciate that the faculty is very accessible and hands-on with connecting students to resources."

  • Degree: Communications (Speech Pathology)
"The pros of my graduate program are numerous. I have many opportunities to interact with my professors (who are excellent) and they administer a lot of work to help us on our way to becoming speech-language pathologists. Georgia State has many research opportunities, and I am on a project that assesses children's language and literacy levels. The cons of Georgia State is that it is in an urban area, meaning that there is a lot of traffic and sometimes unpleasantness when leaving late at night. The program is more hands off, leaving the students to determine what to do instead of having the professors hold our hands and explain to us what to do."

"The graduate program is very rigorous at times; however, I was pleased with the support that I received from the faculty, older cohorts, and my classmates. The faculty is fully invested in our success and easily accessible. The school is located in downtown Atlanta and has many opportunities for social life and professional networking. I believe that Georgia State University is the right choice for me and encourage other students interested in a career in school counseling to look into continuing their studies at Georgia State."

"The benefits to studying speech-language pathology in a downtown, urban area is its close proximity and accessibility to clinical locations and hospitals necessary to the program. I have had many opportunities to study at different hospitals and skilled nursing facilities to further my knowledge and expand my interests. My program is preparing me well with its demanding workload that has reinforced my work ethic that will be useful as a practicing speech-language pathologist. Georgia State University is a unique university that offers most of its students graduate research positions, making it very affordable. The cons of my graduate program are its location in the city which sometimes at night can make a student feel unsafe. Its location can also be inconvenient to get to due to Atlanta traffic."

"Tell us about your college experience.Attending college in the middle of a major city was a positive and negative experience. Students were able to interact with other students from various walks of life (different nationalities, ages etc) on the other hand, there wasn't the "ultimate" campus experience since during that time GSU didn't have dormitories.Would you get the same degree if you could start over? No, I would have pursued a career in writing or English which is where my interests lie. What advice can you offer other students?Give your decision a lot of deep thought. Choose a college and a career that you are passionate about."

"The best thing about Georgia State's College of Law is the affordability. It also had a Top 5 health law program, which is what I'm studying. However, campus safety is a problem. The campus is in the middle of downtown Atlanta, so crime is a problem. Also, parking is very limited. Still, it's located within walking distance of the State Capitol and other businesses."
