"Great school academically. Beautiful campus. For the most part a great school. The administrative offices is what makes the school horrible. Noone at this school is familiar with the meaning of customer service. There is no administrative office that is interested in helping you. They REFUSE TO ANSWER the phones (financial aid, student accounts, registration). On the phone, your call is DEFINITELY going to voicemail. When you go to voicemail you can't leave a message because the voicemail is going to be FULL. They have this department emails for you to send an email to and you will NEVER get a response from one of those emails. It takes a miracle to get a response via email or phone. It's a shame such a great school is ruined by customer service. It's so frustrating that you can't reach anyone. I hope the president or the board reads this message and bring about some changes. Hire more people if necessary. Take a survey to see that I'm not the only one and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!! Please. It'sTerrible!"

"I had high hopes for Hampton. I assumed going to a historically black university meant that I would be in an environment in which I was uplifted and understood as an African American. However, Hampton undermines everything that A black university is supposed to be. I recall missing an opportunity to meet recruiters at a career fair because I did not wear a white collared shirt. An HU administrator rudely Demanded that I leave. Furthermore, The Vice President of Student Affairs and the Hampton University Police Department continuously mistreatment students, stripping them of basic human rights and fairness and Students are penalized without justification .I could never recommend this university to anyone who wants a fair and unbiased college experience."

"Hampton University is one of America's prestigious Historically Black College/ Universities. My experience at the university was very eye opening and character building. I met many new people across the country and even across the world. I took every encounter with someone I met as a learning experience whether our interaction was big or small. During my tenure at Hampton University, I ensured to keep myself involved in various organizations to strengthen my skill set and open my pool of networks. I was introduced to the practice of networking to be open to new opportunities. I often found myself in leadership positions which looked amazing on my resume; companies are always looking for a leader. The Five Year Master of Business Administration program is astonishing. The program polish each students professional side. Each Monday and Wednesday, students learned how to interact with corporate executives and the tools to be successful in corporate America. A plethora of companies across the country visited the campus for the day looking for our talent to bring to their workplaces. The program opened the door for me to intern at a Big Four accounting firm, a company I could have never dreamed me working for. When faced with obstacles, I kept myself grounded. I understood that I had to keep my goal of graduating in front of me. I never gave up on myself and kept myself surrounded by those who motivated me and where cheering for me. I learned the importance of positive thinking. My last two years, I struggled financially and had to truly learn the value of money to be able to stretch a dollar"

"Hampton University is known no only for their "Home by the Sea" safe environment, but also their focus on academics. Hampton University is a historically black college/university which has been held to a high standard since it was founded. When I attended Hampton University it provided me with a sense of togetherness. The faculty and students were able to interact on a professional, but friendly way. The faculty was very helpful when assisting the students with determining exactly what it was that they wanted to do professionally and made sure by following up with the students that they were staying on task. The students came from all walks of life which provided me with some insight as to how others live and think. There were many friendships that I made at Hampton University that later on turned into family relationships. The degree in which I received (BA Psychology) proved not only to be helpful in my future endeavors, but the professors within the field were well rounded and experienced in multiple areas of Psychology which gave the students ideas to pursue their future careers. Overall the experience that I had at Hampton University was an experience that I have taken with me throughout my entire academic career. I find myself comparing every institution to Hampton University and at times become disappointed because every other university is so different."

"Hampton University was the best decision that I made for college. Growing up in New York City, I knew I wanted to go away to school. Hampton University nurtured me to groomed me into the successful individual I am today. The business school had an intensive Finance program that helped me understand the business. I had internship every summer thanks to the career fairs that came on campus. I highly recommend this institution."

"This school was the worst decision I have ever made. Take a trip to any other school in the country and you will find that this one is poor. Not equipped with the same resources as others and operating as if we're still living in the Reconstruction Era. I honestly wished I listened to the warnings before making my choice."

"Hampton University changed my life. I realized that earning an education was the only way out of Camden, NJ. The nursing program had low fidelity manikins that offered students the ability to use simulate case scenarios related to medical-surgical situations. Clinical experiences provided us with real-life patient-centered care. I remember having clinical in a psychiatric unit, and the assignment I had helped me realize the need to perform skillful mental health skills to make a difference in patients with mental health disease."

"Attending Hampton University during my undergraduate matriculation was the best decision I made at the time. As the university's mantra states Hampton University is the "Standard of Excellence". The academic rigor was accompanied with professors who were invested in the success of every student. I would suggest any, and every, student to attend Hampton University!"

"Hampton University is one of the top HBCUs in the country. It has been around since 1868 and has not failed to provide African American students with high quality education. Going to an HBCU gives you a chance to discover who you are as a person in a time that is key to developing as well as get you ready to make a name for yourself when it is time for you to get a job."

"Earning my Masters of Architecture at Hampton University was the best feeling ever. I had worked 5 years to cross the stage. I will say that Architecture is a tough major and you have to put in hard work. I am proud that I made it through and I would not change my experience for nothing. To future students, when you are deciding your major picking something that you will enjoy forever, have a passion for, and really want to make a career out of."

"Hampton University is a fairly small and intimate university where they value developing great citizens of tomorrow. My time at Hampton U. was phenomenal not only did I gain the knowledge to further my career but I also became a self-aware and self-sufficient individual with the eagerness to achieve. I carry the values from Hampton U. in my everyday life. You gain lifetime friends and preparation for life. The courses are rigorous yet the professors are welcoming to personally assist each student to achieve. While at Hampton U. I felt at home, as their slogan states "your home by the sea". It has a comfortable setting right on the water, where one can distress and sit by the water to reflect, study and socialize. The most important thing Hampton University provides is security and safety, my family felt safe sending me 500 miles away from home, simply because I was at my "Home by the Sea". Hampton University is simply the BEST!"

  • Degree: Communications (Speech Pathology)
"The graduate program for communicative sciences and disorders (speech pathology) is a graduate program that leads all students to successful careers helping individuals from all backgrounds who have suffered major ailments that have affected their speech (strokes, traumatic brain injuries etc.) The professors are highly informative and there are plenty of opportunities to obtain hands on experience with the clinic on campus. Also, the program is a good source to network with local hospitals when seeking employment after graduation. On the other hand, the graduate program is very expensive. The average cost of one semester is ten thousand dollars. Also, despite the university having a strong technology presence on campus, professors within the graduate program prefer for all research papers to be submitted in person and not through online software tools such as blackboard."

"I was welcomed with smiles, excitement, and empty promises. Unfortunately the Va Beach campus is poorly run. Most teachers have an attitude and don't desire to help. Nursing is hard but the added stress of the teachers, their attitudes, and lack of desire to teach or even assist you is unacceptable. Classes are unorganized, syllabus is not followed, and things are constantly changing! Several students entered with low gpa - spent over a year in classes only to be told they couldn't move forward because of their cumulative gpa. It's just sad. Only one teacher cares and truly desires for you to succeed. Overall teachers are condescending."

"From a highly structured freshman year (including curfew and professional dress codes) to internship opportunities and professional connections, Hampton University has prepared me mentally and academically to be a confident young professional. I have had multiple reputable internship opportunities and have been more than prepared to compete with my peers from big ten, predominantly white institutions in my internship setting. Not only do I believe in my personal professional success, I believe in that of my peers in and outside of the journalism school (Biology, 5 year MBA and Architecture, Pharmacy etc.) Professors are knowledgeable of industry trends and give great advice on life as well. I have had two of the same professors twice and they know me well and are invested in my performance. 12-2s, celebrity concerts and a beautiful waterfront make for an exciting social atmosphere, where greeks stroll and you may even see President Harvey walking to his home or office. I have studied abroad and met students from all over the world. Being from the Midwest, HU is far from home. The gated, water on three sides campus, where visitors show ID and purpose of visit upon arrival, made my parents feel safe leaving their only child. Critiques of Hampton U include, an administration that usually takes a several phone calls to reach can be frustrating, and the Cost of tuition that I believe would be more reasonable with increased scholarship opportunities to non freshman who have remained on the deans list. Overall, HU has a rich traditional history, sternly invests in character building and is a big family (big brother/big sister program), where you know the names, hometowns, and majors of your fellow Hamptonians. As a member of the Student Recruitment Team, I see first hand the investments HU makes in introducing, touring, and enrolling smart students to be molded into the Hampton Men and the Hampton Women that go on to continue the legacy. The mantra “Standard of Excellence” and “Home by the Sea” are TRUE and I am glad I chose Hampton U."

"Hampton University school of Pharmacy is an accredit by ACPE. It is private school serving mainly African American. The average cost for school of pharmacy is around $28,000 a year. School of pharmacy has good repetition in the industry, specifically retail setting. School of pharmacy is quiet competitive to get in as class size does not exceed 65 students. Student- faculty ratio is estimated to be 7 to 1."
