I am in my 4th term at Kaplan University, finighing my bachelors degree in Criminal Justics. I have to say, I can't complain about one thing. The Professors are great and they somewhat feel more connected, even though it is online. I have a small child and Kaplan makes it so easy for me to finish my degree, and I have never had better grades in my life. You do have to be disciplined and organized to do well though. I would reccomend KU to anyone who wants to finish their degree!
I just completed one term at Kaplan. I am very pleased with the course work and the professors so far. However, I am very disappointed in the after service you receive once they get your money. I cannot seem to speak to a live person when I need to regarding any questions I might have. My financial aid officer was quite useless, he would not answer a phone call, voicemail, or email. I will add that my academic advisor was some better, she would return my emails and tried to answer my questions. Just be careful when making your final decision to go to Kaplan. You will be fine if don't have any questions or need any help. I will be seriously thinking about switching to a different school this next year. I want to go somewhere that I can get assistance when I need it and they at least appear to care about my problems or issues.
I took classes for 1 term and I have to say the classes were great. They made it very easy to learn and the teachers are knowledgable. Everything about them was above average. The negative.... they (financial/ academic/etc) work rigorously with you and promise you the moon until you sign up and get financial aid. After that you get the run around about the promises of scohalrships, credit transfers, etc.. If all the advisors could get it together this could be one of the best programs out there, however, tread cautiously, could be an expensive mistake.
I am in the middle of my BS Business degree with Kaplan, and I have absolutely loved my learning experience. The professors are very helpful, caring and more excited about teaching than many professors I've had at traditional schools.
The school work is challenging, but not impossible. The books are included in the cost of tuition, which helps to offset the higher price of online learning tremendously, although the books are Kaplan versions, so you cannot resell them at the end of the term, unlike some other schools and classes.
I've always found the Academic Advisors to be very helpful and supportive. Student Accounts are reasonable, and Technical Support is helpful and friendly. Financial Aid is a mess - I've been with the school for 2 years and I have had 12 Financial Aid Officers (1-2 different FAOs per term). Financial Aid has been my only complaint, but I have never been suspended from classes due to it, or had any trouble other than having to figure out my own Awards Letter (which, as a BSB, I can do easily), and call in to get them to accept the disbursements from my student loans.
Overall, Kaplan has been an excellent experience for me.
Kaplan U is an okay school, however I do believe, especially at this campus, that there are some major problems. First of all, if your reading this you need to be aware of the fact that Kaplan does not tell you everything right up front, and that you only find out about things after u are here for awhile,
financial aid is difficult at best here. The people are just so darn difficult to deal with, then when it comes time to receive your stipend they forget to tell you that you need a certain percentage to recieve your money. They act like they own that at times.
Overall the instuctors are ok here, however I have dealt with some really nasty ones that don't take the time to talk about things, especially when you only have 9 weeks in a term that can be difficult at times, It is extremely fast paced here, which is a good thing because you can have a degree i n 18 months, which is a short amount of time, however since it has been so fast paced you do feel burned out and just get tired of it real easy.
I'm almost done with my Associate's degree, and have already been approached by the recruiters to go here for my BA, however since I have felt so disappointed with Kaplan I will not get my BA from this school and as far as my recommendation for future students of Kaplan, I say to use a lot of caution when considering this school because you may not get what you pay for.
I have to say that I have been to my fair share of the traditional colleges and have take an online class before. I am in my 3 term at KAPLAN and it is the best choice of my life.
I was nervous about going back to school for several reasons, mainly due to the time I had in my schedule to complete the work. I can study when I have free time. There is a lot of writing assignments but all of my professors so far have given fair amounts of time and help to get the assignments finished.
You have weekly seminars that you interact with the professor and other students (but if you cannot make it you can do the alternative writing assignment). You have discussion questions each week based on that weeks learning assignment. It really gets you thinking and it is great to read someone else's view on the material because it can clarify an area that you may not have understood before.
I have had an excellent time from the beginning. My admissions counselor was wonderful--- we still keep in contact. My academic advisor is great and my financial advisor gets back with me when I ask questions (it may take a few days but you can call in for immediate help).
I would recommend this school to anyone--- My only note is to be prepared to work for your grades. You will feel accomplished when you have that degree in your hand. I know I will!!!!
I thought it was great for me, when I say me, I mean it is not for everyone. I have childred so I had to set up my online seminars around them. I had to log in twice a week to be involved in a live class. We read all books on our own time, but had to respond to questions in the forum to receive credit for participation. What i liked most, was that I didn't have to travel and spend time in a physical classroom. As far as improving goes, I would have to say that the amount of people who just are socializing during the open discussions are enormous, they should have a way to control the people who are always interupting and chatting about their lives. I know that happens in classrooms too, but when paying for an online degree, you expect to go online and complete your work in a timely fashion. The professors were great, the way they create new ways to keep students interested in an online environment was very impressive. I am considering startin up again soon so I can finish my bachelors degree.
I graduate from Kaplan this past February with an Associate's Degree in Paralegal Studies. Being a single mom and keeping a full time job is hard enough. I always wanted to go back to school and provide a good life for my son, so I began looking around. I found Kaplan. I really enjoyed my time at Kaplan. I learned so much. It was very flexible and easy for me to get the education I wanted while being a full time employee and mom. I recommend Kaplan University to anyone looking for a low-stress, flexible, and easy way to get the education they want. I liked Kaplan so much, that I am in the process of enrolling again to get my Bachelor's degree!
I received my Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Kaplan University and am now working on my Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice with an emphasis in Forensic Psychology. I thoroughly research online education before choosing Kaplan and found that my decision was not one that I regret.
With any online education program, you have to be discipline, organized, and know how to manage your time wisely. I made sure that I gave myself so much time per day to do my work. The great thing is that I have a week to complete all of my assignments without pressure. The professors, academic advisors, and classmates are all wonderful and helpful.
I like the fact that the courses are geared toward the degree I am working on and not stuff that I don't need. I would encourage anyone who is serious and disciplined about online education to choose Kaplan. I have not, in these three years, had an experience that would warrant me to distrust their concern and care for the students that attend this school.
I enjoyed my online learning experience. In general the professors were very helpful and wanted you to succeed in class. The coursework for me depended on the course. Some classes because of prior background were easy. Some like Discrete Mathematics were hard. Overall I would say the coursework was about right in most cases through for the credits you received. Classmates were very helpful and everyone was more than willing to help each other. It definitely prepared me for work in IT as a programmer
