Miami-Jacobs Career College Reviews
I graduated from the surgical technology program in 2011. Most of what I know about scrubbing came from work experience not what they taught us. My big point I want to make here is do not go here if you ever want to further career. No other schools accept their credits and your degree is looked down upon. I am currently trying to get into nursing school and had to retake every single class I took at Miami Jacobs. Miami Jacobs is not regionally accredited no matter what they tell you. Their tution is crazy expensive so here I am in debt with nothing to show for it. I will say I did get a job bc of this however I make a lot less than I thought I would.
I want to publically thank Miami-Jacobs for changing my life. It was the hardest thing I have ever done and totally worth it! My Program Director Julie Orihood was such an inspiration. All of the staff cared and were wonderful. Students need to not see themselves so entitled; they would be more successful and it would be easier for those of us that are at school for the right reason. I am thankful for everyone who worked hard for me.
I attended this school for the complete 2 year program. When I started I was excited about going to college after almost 20 years and was told what I would accomplish and achieve with my degree BOY was I ever wrong. I feel like I wasted 2 years and over 40K on an education that has done nothing at all for me. The classes were a joke all but one instructor was a joke and the admissions department had no clue what they were doing. I have tried to gain employment at numerous locations but every place I go I get a strange look and an "oh" comment. Needless to say I haven't gained employment and feel that I need to go to a actual credited school in hopes of gaining employment in the field I am in, so more money and further in debt I go.
This school is absolutely horrible I went there and and it was no challenge the teachers didn't take attendance and that messed up my financial aid than I didn't receive financial aid because because it paid for my class but I was paying for my tuition personally and they say you owe them all kinds of money. Bags and flash drive and things they give you before class don't take them that's coming out your financial aid.
I decided to go to Miami Jacobs Career College for Cosmetology and Esthetics. It truly was a horrible mistake. I had so many problems there, especially with the financial aid department. The finacial aid director submitted the wrong number of hours I was attending school, saying I was only going part time when I was going full time. I have been gracious enough to use my husbands GI Bill to go to school, but when the VA saw that I was only going part time, I only received half of my Monthly Housing Allowance. Because of Miami Jacobs poor choice in financial aid employee, I am now not able to pay my mortagage( which is a VA Loan so how does that make us look?) along with car payments( again with the help of VA Loans). After telling the director of the campus in Independence about my situation, he proceeded to leave for a meeting and never seeked me out to apologize or help in any way. So not only am I out $1,000's of dollars, I have to deal with the stress of this situation which cannot be good for my unborn baby. I am a proud Army Wife to a Veteran of 10 years. We have 3 children and 1 on the way and this is how Miami Jacobs decides to treat it's Veterans and dependents!!!!! I would NEVER recommend this school to anyone unless you like not getting the help and education you deserve. The only reason I stuck with this school is because the hours for my programs do not transfer. Miami Jacobs Career College is a broken and money hungry institution.
This is such a terrible school. I have had nothing but problems with them but since the credits don't transfer anywhere, I am stuck with them! When I first started going to this school a few years ago, I had to drop out because my financial aid wouldn't cover it and I didn't have any more money to put towards my degree. I was about halfway done with my degree and I didn't have any problems with the school. Red flag number one, the school didn't have anywhere they were affiliated with where I could get a student loan so I was stuck unless I could get a personal loan which I couldn't. In 2014, however my situation changed and I was able to go back to school and pay for it. When I first started, I didn't have many problems. I had to really work with the administration though, they are a joke! No one ever stays in that office long, you'll always have a new advisor or financial aid representative. The paralegal program only had day classes so I decided to switch to online classes which was the biggest hassle that I have had with them! It was so terrible, I had to reapply and get all of my credits TRANSFERRED even though I was going to the same school. It was terrible, the first quarter of online classes I was scheduled for classes that I had already taken and when I called my advisor they didn't even know that I was a transfer student! I had to send them multiple screenshots multiple times of what courses I had taken and what courses I still had left to take. It took a couple more quarters to find out that my credits didn't transfer because there was a balance on my account with the ground campus! No one told me, I found out by a call from a debt collector! I was so upset, I had to call them and resolve everything because no one was in contact with me yet they had my contact information. They finally transferred my balance to my new account after I told them that I was going to report them to the Better Business Bureau. I had emailed my program director asking if I could still walk at graduation at the ground campus which I was informed that I could and just needed to contact career services. When I contacted the career services department the person that I spoke with didn't have much information but told me that I could walk. I asked her about career placement and she basically put me on the back burner. She even said, "I have an opening at 'ABC Location' but I put another student in for it and I want her to get it." That was the craziest and most unprofessional thing that I had ever heard. I gave up on that, I don't even want to walk at graduation after all of the problems that I have endured. The newest battle with them is that they just added 4 more classes to my program that they want me to take even though next quarter was supposed to be my last quarter which I verified with my advisor multiple times. I'm even taking 5 classes so that I can get it done and get out as soon as possible. The most ridiculous part of it is, one course is just called placement, two courses I have already taken and the last course they signed me up for is an externship which I have been told multiple times that I do not have to take if I am enrolled in online courses because they will enroll me in another course. Bottom line is DO NOT ATTEND MIAMI JACOBS. They don't care about you or your success, all they care about is your money. They will try to take advantage of you in any way possible.
I and my class mates had a wonderful experience in the dental assisting program. J. O. was amazing and I wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for her helping me. Today, I work with a great team where I externed, I love my job and my life.
There is one teacher that was really great, Mrs. V. She puts her whole heart into what she teaches, and she knows a lot. She is very experienced and knows how to relay all the information correctly. However, there are other teachers that are ok. The dental director, Julie Orihood however, is a joke. It's easy to tell how fake she is. She acts like she's very concerned about you as an individual, then turns araound and makes fun of you. I haven't been affected by her personally, but many of my classmates have. We don't say anything about our negative feelings to our dean, for one, we don't know who that is, and two, some people have complained but nothing was done. Jullie constantly talks about how busy and important she is, but I don't think she knows more than what the books say. She hasn't been in the dental office in a long time. So instead of talking about how important she is, she should pay more attention to us, who pay her bills. Alot of the time when in her class, we are left to read and do our homework instead of her teaching us. I hope next semester I wont have her. Mrs. V is the only one in the building that doesn't treat us like we are just numbers paying their bills. She will stay late after class or let us speak with her anytime if we have questions. She does give a lot of homework, but she's fair and takes away the stupid questions leaving the important ones we have to learn. At MJCC, class times are not negotiable, no matter what admissions will tell you. The turnover rate of employees is high, which should tell you something right there. I know that when I graduate, I will get a job as I believe Mrs. V is teaching me the right stuff in a great way that I can understand. Some of the other instructors are good to in a way, but I don't learn as much. I don't think I will have Mrs. V the whole time, I wish I could. If I could do it all over again, I would pay Mrs. V to teach me all that she can without going to MJCC. I'm paying a lot of money, and yes I'll end up with an Associates Degree, but as far as the school, these for profit schools are just that, profit. The supplies we need in class are barely there, classes are small which is great, most of the teachers don't care, I think it's because they are treated like crap by their directors. Turnover rate is high in the management team, the admissions don't always tell the truth. They will do and say anything to get you to sign up. My friends in other programs hate their experience. I don't feel that bad, maybe because im in the dental field. I can say though that if it wasn't for Mrs. Viviana, I would have quit a long time ago. I don't know if she's getting more money, or if she really cares, but I learn most from her. If you join MJCC, go into dental and ask for Mrs. V. You won't regret it. Any other field, I don't know but it doesn't sound all that good. Good luck!
I went into this school because I wanted to be a nail technician. I went there and spoke with an admission and he told me they had a nail tech program. They waited until after my 12 weeks to tell me it wasn't a nail tech program. I was placed In the cosmetology program where you learn nails, makeup and hair. I haven't learned a thing! Im currently teaching myself how to do nails which is no good because I need more education behind it. I'm not learning how to do makeup. The hair rubic is basic! We aren't allowed to use supplies we need in our career in the future. We get treated like children because they want to bring new rules and enforce those more than enforcing education. I wasted my time going here which makes me mad because that's a lot of money wasted on stuff I didn't do. I wanted to do something that was going to better myself but instead it has made me bitter. They are unprofessional, they lack communication, I'm very uncomfortable, there's no heat in the school building but we were told we couldn't wear jackets because it covers up our scrubs. I'm so cold I was literally blow drying myself with a blow dryer in the salon. I feel like the school is money hungry and that's all they want is money. A student had to drop out because they told her she couldn't leave early or miss a day and she has to work. This is the worst school I've ever been to and I give it two thumbs down and some. I was lied to and so were alot of other people. We were told we can't go to the library because there's nobody to check on us. I'm 22 years old. I don't need a babysitter. It seems more like I signed up for daycare instead of school. It's something fishy going on in that school because when I started January 22. 2014 there were a lot of people working in that office and now it's about 5. Teachers would leave and never come back. The financial aid is all messed up messing with the money. Too many lawsuits against that school. I highly WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this school. It's garbage and it needs to be shut down. Refund everything back and shut it down. I'm sick of the school..
I wouldn't even bother. I graduated in 2010. I have not been able to use my degree because no one would hire me. When they read my resume that I graduated from Miami-Jacobs they made a face. And I couldn't get the job. I have been in contact with my classmates and they cannot get jobs for the same reason. So I am stuck with a "degree" that I cannot use. As well as loans that I cannot pay with a minimum wage job for working in a gas station. Its a joke.
