San Joaquin Valley College

So the folks that I've interacted with from the school have been nice and seemingly helpful at times but I think that's the only positive thing I can say here. What I'm upset about is that I'm now paying off a loan for a program that basically got me no-where whilst still working at the job that I'm trying to get away from because the place that I did my externship at (that the school found for me, by the way) was not hiring for an entry level position but more than happy to accept free help for... Read More their auditing so that they could get caught up for the year whilst not providing me very much real experience--I sat in the back corner auditing their receipts with no interaction with the actual biller of the clinic, had some interaction with the Medical Assistants but that was it. I've quickly realized that after having completed this program and applying for entry level medical billing and coding positions that you need a certification through AAPC to even be a real biller/coder and the school didn't even try to get us involved with that. Nor did they teach any subjects that would help us take the test with AAPC. There simply was no mention of AAPC. And entry level positions remotely related to billing and coding want at least a year-2 of experience with medical or billing/accounting experience AND that certification. So if I want to be a real biller/coder, I have to pay even more money to study and test for that so I can be truly certified IN ADDITION to finding an entry level position that MAY consider me after the fact. I can't speak on behalf of their other programs but I don't know.. seems like a waste of time and money for their billing and coding program which apparently is one of their most popular programs?? They can't partner up with AAPC to actually help us students wanting to pursue a career in that though? ANYTHING?

I am a graduate of the medical assistant certificate program, and I finished in 2017. I am so happy I did this and I have been employed for 6 years by two major hospital systems in my state. While hands on skills were limited to none during the program, the externship provided some experience to help my confidence. Garbage school. I already have a degree from a community college. I decided to us up the last of my GI Bill and get another degree from SJVC online. They are your typical Private school, all the bad rap associated with such they definitely have. They refused to accept my credits for math and English from another school because it is all about the money for them. They had some lame excuse how the credit hours didn't match or something which is weird because the math I had to take at SJVC in my program... Read More was the same exact stuff that I just previously taken at the community college. I look at the cost of the programs they charge these people so they can land a 14 dollar an hour job. They are a rip off. It is better to go to a community college where it is much cheaper for a way better education and a degree a potential employer will respect. Most employers once seeing your degree come from a For-Profit college will turn and hire someone else because they know the education is lacking. I only have a couple months to go in my program and am very happy I already have a good job so the degree I receive from this place wont be what I pray I have to lean on to feed my family.

I wouldn't return here if I could turn back time. Typical sales pitch personal, they are super polite and answer all of your questions until you have passed your grace period of opting out of the program. Once you are over that period you don't have that same customer service. Emails are not return as quickly or at all like before. I once received an email from the student adviser letting me know that non passing grade would effect my student loan. Didn't even care that I was reaching out to the... Read More student adviser and the person giving out the information for the module that I was having a hard time comprehending the information. It's sad that they say they care but don't. It's all about the money. I signed up for the online courses because I work full time and I am a single mother. I get these supposedly teachers telling me when I should do the homework not knowing my situation or my schedule, Of course I know if I turn it in I get points docked off. But very stupid and inconsiderate to tell me that I should do it before my due date. The books that are used are very unorganized and awfully written. I can go on but this is shall be it for now.

I really enjoyed attending SJVC On-line classes. The on-line classes worked well for me because they allowed me to complete my school work while traveling and, when I was at home, I had the flexibility I needed to pilot a literacy program in my community. I began my classes in January 2016 and just completed my Associate in Business Administration and Management degree. The workload was heavy, but manageable, which I expected for a compressed program. There were two, and rarely three, classes every... Read More 5 weeks and a lot of support from the advisors, support staff, and faculty. The On-line system was stable and usable. Once I learned how to navigate, it helped me keep on track with weekly quizzes, exams, assignments and discussion posts. I settled into a rhythm and the months passed quickly. Much of what I learned I have already put into practice. This was the sweetest part of earning this degree. Business skills in planning, managing, and leading others will be helpful to me. Learning about business structures and policies has already helped as I am in the start-up phase of my business. And, the sociology, psychology and ethics courses were interesting to me and have taught me a great deal about myself and others that I know will be useful in my career. My next goal is to complete a Bachelors Degree. I have been accepted at Berkeley College and they have accepted 54 degree credits. So, I am on my way to a Bachelors in Business Administration and Management.

Applying for the school and being accepted was easy peasy. All along the way through every week, I'd have contact from my teachers, advisors, and M.S. who helped me get into medical assisting program. I have to say M.S. was the most encouraging person to help me stay on track starting out. Another very influential person was one of my professors, professor H. She sent emails to encourage you to do your best and was very responsive if you felt unsure about your work or studies. The classes were a... Read More breeze for me, but for someone who has a hard time managing time, online may not be best. The last five weeks of classes were challenging for me. There was a program called Harris CareTracker and unless you had Internet Explorer, you cannot log on to complete your homework with practicing EHR. That's one thing I'd have to give the program a 0/5 rating for. It was VERY frustrating not having the ability the first time taking my last classes to log on to HCT. My Mac did not support Internet Explorer, nor did any of my friends or family (that were easy to contact to borrow their computer) had the old and outdated Internet browser. It was a little rocky finding an internship, but on my last day of classes my student advisor found a site thanks to her persistence! I begin my internship in a mere three days and I have no doubt that thanks to the accreditation, qualification, and experience I will gain at my internship will be the very stepping stones to begin my career I've always dreamed of. I really enjoyed attending SJVC online. I think that if you have the option for in-class hands-on training you should at least compare it to SJVC as your only hands on experience before your NCCT exam will be your clinical externship. There's a lot of bad reviews on here which I find very sad! Online learning is not for everyone. I am a very fast paced, independent learner and this type of education fits me and my learning styles the best. I chose to do the medical assistant certificate program online so I could get working in the field quickly and start making money. Now that I have completed my certification I've decided to go back to finish my associates with SJVC online. Now if you're still reading this, thank you. I'm going to encourage you here for a second- no matter what you're studying, or going to study. You can do it! Set your mind up for success and it is yours! I find it disturbing to see so many dissatisfied reviews about SJVC. My experience was excellent, I pushed myself and did my homework giving it my all. I had some excellent teachers and I had some that could improve but the overall experience was excellent. I worked hard and found a good externship site. I have been graduated since may 2013 and im still seeking work as a CMA the problem is no-one will hire you with out experience and school is just not enough training they do don't offer job placement and you get passed around from one career advisor to the next I think this school is a JOKE ! and a WASTE of MONEY DO NOT WAST UR MONEY ON THIS SCHOOL... I chose to do this program because I wanted to become a medical assistant quickly and I wanted to do it while taking other courses at another university. I already had a bachelors of science degree in biology but needed direct patient contact experience for graduate health programs. I found the classes to be incredibly easy because I had already studied anatomy, phys, and other sciences in much more detail. Your classmates are not going to be the brightest people... Read More and many of the assignments are just busy work. I got what I needed from the program and graduated in the amount of time desired. The staff was very attentive in the beginning of the program and less attentive by the end, but I was doing fine so that did not affect me. I got lucky and had a great externship coordinator that was actually able to find me multiple potential externship sites. Noah followed up on one that had accepted me and they seemed to be questionable, so he called me right away and we began searching for alternatives just in case. When it came to choosing a site, I actually had two and had the option of choosing the one that I wanted. In the end I chose the right site, because they hired me and that is currently where I am working. I can honestly say I love my job and I am learning new things every day. To be completely honest, I work in a specialty office and pretty much all of my course work does not apply to what I do every day. I had to be trained by the office, but I don't mind that.

If I had the time, I would have done my classes at an actual physical campus rather than online. I feel that I would have learned more. There are times when the doctor I work for asks if I have ever done certain procedures, and I have to say no because I have really only read about them. Some of the clinical skills like drawing up medications and actually taking blood pressure are hard to learn through a computer and need to physically be practiced.

This school was a good fit for me, however I do not feel that it would be a good fit for everyone. I was able to get a good extern site that ended up in employment for me, but I had fears that I would have a difficult time finding a site and no assistance. Offices also do raise an eyebrow when they hear that you got your training online, be prepared to face some discrimination when it comes to looking for an extern site and a job. I must add that the actual diploma does not say online and just says SJVC, which is nice!

I am in the construction management program and will be graduating in 2014. I have been in the construction field for 20 years and decided to get a degree. I searched for months for the right fit for my lifestyle and found that SJVC was the right one. The price for admission is average for the crazy prices of college these days. My instructors are experts in their field and available to talk almost anytime. Even after years in the field, I have learned a whole lot and continue to learn every day. I also get my general courses done for the Associates degree that I dreaded (like college mathematics). The way they have it set up online is a great fit for a motivated learner and one that has been out of the education system for a while. As far as my adviser goes, she is great. She tutors me when I need it, connects me with the staff that I need to get answers to questions, and is helpful every time she is needed. The career placement staff is very helpful, but busy. After 2 people leaving the position, I got a guy that was top notch and helped me land a job in a different state. He walked me though the interview process, gave me great advice, and helped my confidence level tremendously. Overall, I would give my experience at SJVC a 7/8 out of 10 and would recommend people check them out for online course work.

If I would not lose 7,000 dollars I would drop out of my program. I have never had so many rude teachers for an education I had to take loans out to pay for!!

I have been a student with SJVC online. I have done two programs and payed ALOT of money for my education. I have had numerous problems trying to get a repsonse from staff!! When I started this school was very organized, NOW NOT AT ALL.

You must wait 24 hours for a response from anyone. So what are these staff memebers doing in the office?? The school even sent me a book that fell apart the frist time I even opened the book. I got my Associates of Science degree in CMA from SJVC Online. The classes were good, for the most part I like the teachers at SJVC. Honestly I have not found a job in my field and I can not say it because of SJVC.

Medical Assisting is not as "booming" as everyone makes it seem, unless you have several years of experience in Medical Assisting, then you will have a hard time finding a job in that field. I finished my Associates degree in 16 month's which is great and I found it useful to transfer for credits so I liked SJVC because of that, I can't say that the degree I have helped me get a job though because it has not. I think SJVC is a good starter for your college career if you plan on going beyond your associates degree because you can use it towards further your education, that is what I will suggested it for.
