"Southeastern Louisiana University is a highly underrated haven for academia. Being a smaller university, there is more opportunity to be recognized as an individual and not just a number. The faculty and staff all genuinely care about the students who attend, and they want to help students succeed in any way possible."

"When I lived in Louisiana, Southeastern Louisiana University (or Selu) was the college that fit me best. Southeastern is in a town between New Orleans, and the state capital, Baton Rouge. Although Southeastern was considered a commuter school, I met some of my best friends there. The students and locals I interacted with on and off campus were polite and embodied the spirit of southern charm. As a psychology major, I was able to build rapport with my professors. If you are looking for a university with great education and an atmosphere that embraces growth, Southeastern Louisiana University will be the school for you."

"Southeastern has had one of the most renowned education programs in the state. The professors were willing to go out of their way to provide assistance to their students, but in the same breath, they always held students to a high standard. My brother went to a prestigious university in New Orleans and graduated in music education. His content knowledge was very strong, but for the first three years of teaching, my brother struggled with aspects of classroom management (discipline, withitness, rapport, etc.). These were skills in which Southeastern's educational programs and professors made sure students had a strong foothold."

"Southeastern is a great school with knowledgeable staff that will help you with your goals. I have been to LSU, and BRCC, and once I came to Southeastern, I knew that it was the place for me. Southeastern has the professionalism of a full-blown university, but the simplicity of a community college. Although I did not personally take any, I do not remember seeing any freshman/sophomore classes with the size of a university like LSU (close to a hundred people in a classroom!!) The vast majority of the classes in Southeastern are smaller, and manageable. If you put forward the effort, your teacher will remember who you are, and will be willing to work with you."

"I enjoyed school. I wish I had continued while I was at the point in my life where I did not have responsibilities. I also would try without student loans."

"I have no complaints about SLU. I received a rigorous, well-rounded education. My master's degree program in Communication Sciences and Disorders was the top in the state and was very selective. I was very prepared for the workforce upon graduation."

  • Degree: Criminal Justice
"The curriculum for Southeastern's criminal justice program is closely related to their sociology degree. Many of the courses were seminar/discussion based rather than lecture. Because of this, as well as completing a minor in sociology, I can say I am well prepared for my future as a law student. Most of the faculty, including the department head, were helpful in guidance after graduation regarding employment. Overall quality of teaching by all of my professors was excellent."

"The classes were small and professors were more than willing to go above and beyond to help. The students were also there to learn, which always helps make the program more successful. There were many out of class projects to help relate in class lessons to real world activities. I would definitely recommend this program at Southeastern."

"The degree I received did not help me in anyway in my career. I am actually damaged from the loans. I need to get a masters degree in a different major to do well in my chosen career field. I am currently an office worker. I want to me a controller in my company. I will not be able to achieve this goal with out a masters degree."

"The nursing program at SELU is amazing. Not only do I feel I was a prepared nurse for the profession, but I feel it helped me grow and mature as an adult. The classes are not easy and do require some rigorous studying; however, at the end of the coursework you feel like you truly earned your degree. I would recommend this university to anyone looking for a great school and a great future."

"As a commuter student, I enjoyed my time at Southeastern. They offer many interesting classes, the staff & professors really care, and the textbooks are rent-able for the most part which saves money. Great college experience overall!"

"I loved my graduate program because of the opportunities made available to me and the educational quality I received. I took a lot of valuable lessons with me to my professional career because I feel I am greatly prepared for my current job. I honestly cannot think of anything negative to say about the program. My only wish is to have a diverse, student population in the program."

"I feel some pros of this graduate program are how invested the majority of the faculty are in the progress of the graduate students, how the support of the graduate student body itself is set up, and how small the school is, which fosters a feeling of community. I feel some cons of this graduate program are the low amount of the stipend, the high out-of-state taxes, being taxed on the tuition even though it's waived, budget cuts overall, and a general lack of grant money."

"I believe SELU offers a great mix of diverse faculty and some excellent mentors who truly seek to help students succeed in what they do. The only con I might think of is the small town feel of the town with little major things around, however this is a positive for many!"
