University of Colorado Boulder Reviews of Bachelor's in Biology

"I enjoyed CU and Boulder and my overall college experience for the most part. As Biology (Pre-Med), most of my classes were in auditoriums, Chem 140 being a popular location for most of them, as I recall. It was not unusual to have 300 students in my classes. I have always wished I had done one of two things: 1.) that I had chosen a different major and area of study which matched my personality and abilities better and that would have been supported by a smaller class size at CU, or 2.) that I had chosen a smaller liberal arts college with smaller classes so that any latent abilities or interests I might have possessed might have had an opportunity to bubble up to be discovered. Instead of medical school, I flew in the Navy, then with the airlines. Because I have felt I did not receive a well-rounded , more personal education at CU, I have not given monetary support to the institution."

"I went to CU undecided on what I wanted to study. Because it is such a big school, people who are more social and experience less anxiety in general will flourish here. It is beautiful and there is always something to do. Living on campus, however, is difficult as it is often very loud in the dorms. To say it is a party school is almost an understatement. While I didn't attend any parties, I was invited to many and there were quite a few on Mondays. Because of this pressure to attend parties and rank higher in popularity, I witnessed a lot of girls that struggled with drinking or being in unsafe situations. Overall, I personally didn't feel safe living on campus. The professors are engaging and have helpful resources. Students range but I generally found they were not welcoming. Most students were, unfortunately, reserved and stuck-up. This may have just been due to the stress many students experienced or bad timing, but I had to go the extra mile to make friends. This school is great for receiving a degree and being in a beautiful environment, however it is socially loud, socially demanding and sometimes dangerous."

"University of Colorado is a wonderful university for those going into science fields. It has great opportunities for those in the science/ premedical fields from research positions to teaching assistant positions. That being said, you do have to seek them out yourself and apply for a few in order to secure a spot. However, the effort will be well worth it in the long run whether applying for jobs or graduate school upon graduation. CU is a large university so the first couple of years, class sizes can be quite large (200+). They will usually have study sessions or professor hours with smaller groups and I recommend any student attend these as they will offer a different type of learning experience than the lecture-type classroom. As you get into high level classes (3000 or 4000 level), the class sizes get smaller and feel much more manageable. The programs themselves offer many resources to help students succeed from a writing center to tutoring hours- a great resource that many student do not take advantage of. Overall, I feel that this program put me in a good place to apply for additional schooling both in terms of the courses I had taken as well as the rigor of the school- so consider this if seeking a graduate degree. Location wise, CU really cant be beat. It is nestled up against the foothills and offers boundless outdoor activities in a picturesque location. The school has many clubs to get involved in activities and feel like a part of the community."

"CUB is a really fun college. You will find all kinds of people here, and you can do whatever you want to do and study whatever you want to study. The Integrative Physiology program is very strong with some of the best instructors (think Nobel Prize). Also heavy research oriented so if you want to get somewhere, you are very likely to find awesome academics as well as influencers."

"The University of Colorado Boulder has tremendous resources for students to network and to have the opportunities to pursue a career that they love. I thought my study in integrative physiology was rigorous and the cadaver labs were an extension to our classroom knowledge. Many of the professors were researches, which was very beneficial but at the same time detrimental. They sometimes were more focused on their research than their classrooms. Overall though, I believe the future of the students that attend CU Boulder is bright and promising."

"UC Boulder is beautiful, growing campus! Lots of outdoor activities and a wonderful environment overall. There is a lot of wonderful research opportunities as well as great professors in many different areas of study. I have a degree in integrative physiology and feel like it has prepared me for graduate school."

"The University of Colorado at Boulder, Integrated Physiology degree provided me with a well rounded, advanced preparation for a career in healthcare. The degree curriculum was well thought out and I appreciated that there were elective options to individualize my course work. As a senior, there were six courses to choose from - giving the student flexibility in what they want to study. The anatomy program is fantastic, I feel more prepared than my peers in graduate school due to the rigor and depth of the anatomy course work. This program prepared me to be successful in healthcare and I would recommend CU Boulder, and the Integrated Physiology BA to anyone interested in science and healthcare."

Not only that, the professors also worked on different lecturing techniques in order to ensure everyones unique learning style was addressed. I loved that in my major we worked outside and did a lot of hands on work"

"CU Boulder is a wonderful school all-around. The professors are world-class and you will constantly be learning from the newest and brightest research going on in the sciences. The advisors are always helpful and available for all questions you may have, from transitioning to college to preparing for life after graduation. I felt like the campus was one of the most gorgeous in the whole world, and Boulder itself is a very active and vibrant place to live. As far as large schools go, CU Boulder made me feel like I was part of a community rather than just a number on a page. Highly recommend the hard sciences at this university, as the research going on here is extremely exciting and top-notch!"

"I absolutely loved attending the University of Colorado in Boulder. Boulder is one of the most amazing towns in the country, and the university is unparalleled in the opportunities is provides to science majors. The caliber and quantity of research happening at CU is amazing, and as an undergraduate you can find amazing opportunities to work in labs, find mentors, become an undergraduate TA and more if you seek them out. At CU you will receive a quality education while having an amazing experience in the outdoors. Boulder is liberal, progressive, outdoorsy, friendly, fun, and there is always something to do. Hiking steps from your house, skiing nearby, shopping, concerts, good food, etc. I loved my education here, and encourage others to look int the opportunities and experiences CU can provide. CU is a big school, so be prepared to take initiative and advocate for yourself. However, I always say that you can make a big school smaller, but not a small school bigger. Just make sure to join some club or sport while you are here. That is KEY."

"Academics: The biology department at this school is pretty good; the instructors/researchers are for the most part cooperative with each other and with students. TA's from the biology department were excellent. I hated living in Boulder (a very crowded small city with high strung people), but the biology department and the setting of the city kept me there for nearly 5 years."
