"After doing ample research before I decided to go to UMUC, it's only fair that I leave feedback for future students to use.I am currently wrapping up my last semester here at UMUC. I will be graduating with a masters in Management Information Systems and Services.First off, the school is a great value for in-state students. The cost per credit compares favorably to every other "real" school in the area. And UMUC is a real school. It is part of the state's university system and it has been since 1947. It is also regionally accredited. UMUC should never be lumped in with the for-profit colleges. Before I enrolled I was worried about the quality of education, but I was delighted at how challenging the coursework was. I took mainly online courses, and most professors were very demanding. I found my experience at UMUC to be much more challenging than my undergrad experience at University of Maryland, College Park. Some classes were easier than others, and some professors were easier than others, but I think you'll find that anywhere you go.The online "class room" is a program called WebTycho. It is a little outdated, but I was told by a professor that UMUC is looking to upgrade it in the near future.I read a lot of negative reviews about student services. I can honestly say I never had a problem with student services. I used student aid and everything went fine.Ultimately, I learned a lot of things that I'm already applying to my career. I'm very glad I pursued my masters degree at UMUC."

"I am 5 weeks into my 8 week courses. So far, so good. They are very informative and interactive. I am disturbed by the reviews that state this "isn't a real university." It's part of the state university system of Maryland. How can you attend a school and not realize that it's a state university? My first college was CSUS, a ranked state university in California. I joined the military, so I needed an online option for school. At CSUS there were far less assignments. There would be a weekly quiz, a midterm and final for most 100 level classes. UMUC has multiple assignments due every week along with a midterm and final. I like how the tests are unproctored, because now I don't have to arrange for a testing site every 4 weeks. The midterm for both of my classes contained essay questions. Without a good understanding of the material, you will not do well on the exams. You can't just flip around the text book to answer essay questions. UMUC uses college level text books and the professors grade fairly. I have submitted work that was below par and recieved a C! Student services are very slow, but they get things done eventually. I highly recommend this school."

"The quality of courses here is very good. I have two degrees from highly rated brick & mortar schools (UC Berkeley and UNC-Chapel Hill) and the quality of instruction / workload is pretty comparable.Where UMUC drops the ball is student services. Financial aid is a disaster. If you fall even the slightest bit outside the norm or have the slightest hiccup, your aid will fall into the bottomless pit, taking weeks to rectify.I have a situation where my undergraduate aid overpaid, which I rectified by consolidating my loans. I now have to drive down to Adelphi every year to redemonstrate that the same problem has been handled. To top it off, I now have a hold on my account for an overdue bill, for Fall semester, and financial aid won't process awards for another month, so I can't make changes to my schedule. It's just a disaster."

"Overall UMUC is a good school. It's definitely one where you will earn your degree instead of buy it like some of the for profit colleges. This is an accredited non profit state school. Some professors can be a bit demanding but you have to work for that grade. Recommend."

"I had a great experience at UMUC,I completed my MBA with no major issues, I actually enjoyed it, word of advice if you are not a good time manager this school is not for you. They only area I believe they could improve is in the student services area "the are truly slow to respond"."

"Do not attend this school. I was given a B in a class because of a group project that I had no control over. My part of the group project was not even looked at nor graded. My final grade was an 88.625 in a class that I could have taught. ITEC610, Introduction to IT is the class.I have 15+ years of IT experience. The professor said that we did not site sources that we did site, that we said things that we did not (it's all in writing) and I had A's on almost everything else. My goal was to get a 4.0 in Grad school and that goal is shot because of the professors subjectivity. We weren't even given a chance to fix it, now the professor is ignoring us. Go to a real school like GMU. I will be transfering shortly."

"This was my first online course with UMUC. The instructor seemed unprepared and disorganized. She also seemed unprepared to commit an appropriate amount of time to the class. She didn't answer student questions in a timely manner. I agree that many questions, students could answer for themselves by taking a critical look at the instructions already received. This professor also didn't answer the questions resulting from her own lack of attention to detail, wasting the students' time. She checked in only during the weekends, when the assignments were due and too late to help the students. She was also not properly trained on the use of the website, telling students the problem was theirs, not hers, that they couldn't access what she had posted.Initial instructions told us that we needed three books for a total cost of $142 including the shipping. In the end, the instructor used only one of the books($60) and barely that. The syllabus was an unorganized mess. We were instructed to read the same thing over and over. Sometimes repeating the same information from different places within the book, sometimes the same pages more than once, sometimes having us read the same thing from an online source as what we had already read in our textbook.I sent an e-mail to UMUC about my concerns halfway through my 8-week course, but never received a response. My impression is that they are not concerned with the problems students may be having at their school.I'm also still waiting for the return of my tuition assistance for a class I cancelled. The first person I spoke to acknowledged that the school had received payment, but had reversed the payment. The second person claimed it had never been received because I hadn't been billed because I had cancelled the class. Luckily, it was only a one-credit class and only $250, so if I can't ever get them to return the payment, it won't be quite so much out of my pocket.I had looked for a link on thier site to comment on problems with their faculty, but couldn't find anything. I assume they don't want to deal with student issues as long as they get paid.I received an A in the class, so I'm not complaining out of disappoinment over my grade. I'm now looking for a new school that takes student concerns seriously."

"This schools student services is horrible. Don't try calling, they are not helpful at all. If you email, it takes at least a week for a response. In my specific case, I have been active duty and taking classes for the past 10 years. I took MATH 105 through UMUC near the beginning of my college career. Now that I want to take a classes that has a pre-requisite of Math 103, 106, 107 or higher, they will not accept my class as a pre-requisite. In addition to having to take another MATH class, "Students may receive credit for only one of the following course: MATH 105 or MATH 106." In other words, the student advisor is telling me that I need to take a class that I will not receive credit for and that they will not accept my MATH 105 class to satisfy the pre-requsite requirement.Future students...beware of which courses you take, they may or may not accept thier own courses to meet pre-requisite requirments. This school is looking out for its own financial interest and not for the invested interest of its students."

"This classes are good and so are many of the teachers, but this school has the worst services and administration staff I have ever encountered. If you need help, you can never reach anyone. So you email and they never respond back. I would not recommend this school to anyone, they have made it as difficult as possible!"

"I think FA office just tried to give students some answers to get them off the phone. I enjoyed my professors at UMUC and I think that their teaching experiences really help my courses; however, FA office have some serious problems. They always tell you that your FA went through and ready to be disburse, but a month later you will get the same answers. Several times where I get my FA on my last week of 7 weeks- course when UMUC FA policies say that you will get it 2 weeks before school start. The facts that I called them doesn't help because they just give you some answers that you have received before "you will get it in 24-48 hours". So many times like that but you don't get it until a month or two later. Highly not recommend it because of the stresses and pains you will have go through to get an answer with FA office. It is not worth it. Try Davenport University, it is 400 dollars cheaper and quick and ASAP answers."
