University of Phoenix Reviews of Master's in Healthcare Administration

Many mixed reviews about UoP. I may be in a different position than most others. I enrolled in the MHA program for self growth, not for career advancement. I am currently finishing the MHA program, capstone project. I have taken 11 on line courses and have to say have learned a great deal, even though I have been in healthcare leadership for 35+ years. The learning experience has been fun as I have been able to study on my own time and not be tied to a strict program that requires class attendance.... Read More Every time I have needed help, the school has been very responsive and addressed any of my concerns or questions, quickly. I entered the program last year and so far it has worked for me and enjoyable. I have studied a lot, written a lot, and learning a lot! Keeping my fingers crossed I do well with completing MHACB 599 (Capstone Project).

I'm writing primarily to respond to some concerns here and to provide an update on the program. UoP offers both an traditional and accelerated program for MHA completion. If you're a clinician or other long-time health professional that did well in undergrad, I encourage you to consider the accelerated program. It is cheaper and the program is teaching non-health professionals how to think on larger scales and consider regulatory requirements. The degree will help with my career progression, as an... Read More advanced degree is preferred for senior leadership. The program carries is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME), which is preferred for military and government jobs. Use that preference to help your job search if you were unaware. And if you were unaware: why? Job progression and placement is a personal responsibility. How do you perform in your current job? If you're not consistently meeting and exceeding goals and a team player, of course you won't be given an internal promotional opportunity based on your degree obtainment. External want to hear what you have accomplished in your professional life. This is a professional degree, designed originally for those already working in the industry (Assignments altered for COVID restrictions/job loss). If you're working to advance your current career which is going well enough - take accelerated and knock it out. If you dunno health care, do the classes. There is a slew of folk as described below that are in over their heads and will make team work difficult at best. Team work became less taxing about 3/4 of the way through the program (lol). The individual classes run about $2200, not $3k listed below. I opted out of a specialization, as all are topics I feel I've covered professionally. I suppose my overall point is that you get what you put into it. The schooling is for the education and self growth, not for a piece of paper. If your mindset is that paper will magically open doors, don't bother taking a spot in class. If you think/know it will be a tool in your career progression kit, rock n roll.

I am very disappointed with University of Phoenix. Tuition and additional fees are so expensive compared to other online schools. The professors and the curriculum are fairly poor. One think I've noticed is that numerous people have complained about not graduating on their perspective commencement date because of failing their class. Classes cost over $3,000 each and the professor will find a way to make the student retake at least one class during their journey. I think its a scam and hope someone... Read More will look into this further. I mean what is a student to do if they have to retake class to receive their degree? The student will find a way to fork up the money to fulfill their dreams. I regret not choosing another school.

Upside: This institution delivered a well-rounded education delivered by practitioners in the field. Downsides: Extremely expensive, Senior Administration does not connect with the student body, there is a restrictive limitation on the number of references that one may request form the Dean's office (fellowships, scholarships, professional, etc.), The office of financial aid pushes student loans and offers minimal support for scholarship opportunities, no Latin Honors for some programs, minimal professional... I am unpleased with the school for the following reasons: The instructors were not well selected, I did not receive any job/career placement after finishing THREE degrees with the University of Phoenix. There was no added assistance with job placement and now I owe more than $97,000.00 in financial aid. I am paying the minimum because it is not right that I still have the same job/position that I had when I started with University of Phoenix. I completed three degrees: Associates, Bachelors, and... I received all my three diplomas in the mail with the official transcripts and that was it. I felt as if they wrote me off like any other college. I worked hard to obtain a high GPA did all the course work and I even spoke and wrote better English then most of my professors. Being an educator myself for over 24 years I felt that I would have been treated with decency when it came time for graduation. The ceremony was in Arizona and there was no support on having me or family attend which we would have like to be there. So now I walk around with a fake leather bound degree stating University of Phoenix and I have had job opportunities turn me down because they have stated "that is not a real school." What am to do. This college is like all the other online programs, they find teachers to fulfill the academic role and then who cares about the rest. Well I am not paying the loan that is owed because I feel that more assistance should be given for Job/ Career Placement despite what is going on in the economy. If the economy is so bad that I cannot get a better for to fulfill Masters Degree in Health Administration then I should not have to pay the loan I took out thinking that this would bring more meaning and direction to my life. I have recommended no one to University of Phoenix. Go to a real graduate school like Fordham, New York University and many others do not go to school online you do not know what you are getting involved in.

I've read several reviews and feel compelled to interject my two cents...I just completed my master's degree and feel such a sense of accomplishment. I did this for myself and possibly my career.

I want to comment on a few things I have read in the reviews...first, I had only the experience of incredible communication with my academic adviser, S., and had no difficulty ever understanding and obtaining help with any financial aid matters. The content of the courses was amazing and at times, I felt... Read More very challenged. My only beef is that aside from a checkbook, there exists little criteria for entry.

I say this as many, if not most, folks in my classes needed to go back and revisit English 101. I was amazed that some folks were able to proceed through a master's program and not even understand the basics centered on grammar, APA, and spell check!

Along the lines of career placement, I have had no introduction but I do suggest that each person steer the helm of their own future and not wait for promises of job placement. For those that write complaints of this offering, I suggest spending more time honing your grammar and seeking professional resume advice...

If you do not have the two mentioned above then yes you are not going to make it through any on-line program. I worked full time, moved 1000 miles for a new job and still finished my MHA in 2 years.

It was hard, I had to be dedicated, self disciplined, and stay on top of all the work necessary for me to get an A. I know other people who have tried to do this type of degree and they quit. My advisers were totally awesome. I had one for financial, education, a life coach, and may other helpful people who really did care. Even when I thought I would not survive I got the strength from my life coach (a part of your tuition from UoP) to complete my degree.

The University knows the struggles of working, family, and school. So they have given every resource to us as a part of the program, which if you use will be very helpful. But you must use them to get the benefit. The help is their and the professors are very dedicated. Most of them work full time and have families just like us, so they understand time restrains.
