"Thus far, the faculty and staff at GSPIA have been nothing but helpful and very accessible, and for that I am very appreciative. The program itself is quite expensive, however, nationally ranked. I just wish there were more opportunities for funding outside of federal financial aid. The in-school scholarship and grant opportunities are few. Other than that, I do really love Pitt. I completed my undergrad here and am happy to be back."

"Pros: PhD students are well supported throughout the program both by faculty and through student mentorship. Courses are taught by seasoned faculty with many years of experience in the area of the course. An excellent education for most students. Cons: Some students who have areas of interest that don't mesh with faculty will have a harder time finding help and support."

"I feel the pro's of my graduate program are that there are viable job opportunities upon graduation, a supportive teaching staff, and a high standard of excellence. I feel the cons are the extremely high tuition and the ability to access certain professors."

"The University of Pittsburgh Cognitive Psychology Program is unique in that it allows for collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University through the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition. Here, I am not only getting training in cognitive psychology, but also a concentration in cognitive neuroscience, access to advanced neuroimaging techniques, and mentorship from faculty who are well respected experts in their fields. I thoroughly enjoy my program and have no complaints about my education or training."

"It's a great program for people who like city living and are interested in geriatrics, hospital social work, or children and youth work but less so for other programs. Many of the classes could be more rigorous but you still learn a fair deal. There are great field work opportunities but having a good advisor makes a huge difference. Great environment, great classmates, and some very good professors."

"Pitt is a good university and very competitive. Faculty are pleasant also. The city is quite cold in the winter but is a lot of fun (aside the weather)"

"Pittsburgh is a nice place to stay and the university is nice, but the TA workload is heavy as a graduate student"

"Pitt Political Science is a good, overall program with an emphasis on a quantitative approach and to producing scholars ready for academia. It has a few sub-area specialties in which it is particularly strong, and some of the regional ones are supported by various centers throughout the university, which provide further resources, support, and funding."

"If you have a good connection to an advisor you will do well and go far...make sure you have this before you accept any offer! PhD and MA/PhD students are funded well, including health insurance, tuition waiver, and stipend, which covers cost of living in Pittsburgh. I have no debt from my program, which is a huge plus. For those doing the MA, occasional positions teaching English at the ELI or other departments are not guaranteed. Figure out your funding before coming. Students funded through TAships have vastly varied levels of work, and thus have unequally full schedules that permit varying degrees of focus on graduate work. Those who teach in the Spanish department and the ELI, for example, have huge classroom workloads that are frustrating, especially considering other students with similar credentials and levels of experience who only have to grade. This can lead to getting behind on required work or research in some cases. Undergraduate students are hard working and up for a challenge at Pitt, which makes them a joy to teach!"

"The program was very diverse and prepared me well for a career in biological research. Good balance of classes early on and lab work later. I became an independent, thoughtful scientist. I wish there had been more training or networking for careers outside of academia, though I believe a lot of graduate programs lack this. The graduate student community was absolutely the best and there was always a great social atmosphere. As for the city, I don't believe there is a better place to be a PhD student than Pittsburgh. Tons of things to do--concerts, sports games, theater, restaurants-- all while living in a very grounded city in the Rust Belt with a completely affordable cost of living."

"The area surrounding the Pitt campus is filled with a variety of cultural neighborhoods and things to do, though the cuts in public transportation make it more hasslesome to get to some places without personal transportation. The academic environment is reasonably competitive and most of the classes I have taken were relevant and applicable to what I wanted to do. The workload is heavy, but not unreasonably so. I think financial aid could be boosted, but it is not the worst I have seen."
