This is a teach yourself program. Some of the test are online with the use of a camera and microphone to prevent cheating Less than 1/5 of my cohort has finished the program as of today. What I have learned most was patience and constant let down. But the Price for this program is Workable. I paid for it out of pocket. The assignment criteria is so vague and the course mentors are not helpful. WGU grades your practical assessments through a company called Taskstream. Often, I would turn in my assignments, knowing that Taskstream would rejected it, just so I could get clarification back from the company actually grading my work. The BSN program is mostly online, with clinical rotations at local hospitals. WGU has contracts with the local hospitals. Some locations treat you poorly because you are in an online program. The WGU students sometimes get the left over assignments. Even though WGU is a BSN program and some of the other schools may only be LVN or ADN. WGU does not have credits, the program is a "Meets Requirements" grading system. This has not a problem for my when it came to applying to a Nurse Practitioner Program. Many programs accept WGU transfers. I actually graduated from a Traditional university, so I have that background to compare to WGU. A BSN at WGU is my Second degree. WGU says its a 2 year program but it ends up being 2 and a half because they make you retake courses. Its all about the money. For example, my undergrad is in biology. SO I have a lot of upper level chemistry and biology but I still had re-take biochemistry. I also have about 10 years in the medical field working in a laboratory to working bedside too. The first semester, I blew through it with in weeks. But I was not able to advance into the next semester. Then two course mentors blocked my advancement because they would not approve my objective assessment i.e. final exam. The course mentors felt like I did not study the material thoroughly. So every term I started in the previous term and I was ready to test like a few days into the new term. But course mentor DA and CD did not care. Lastly, They really took their time dragging my graduation paperwork through processing. Even though I express to multiply departments that I had employment pending and I need to take my NCLEX ASAP. I offered to pay to have my paperwork expedited. I have been delayed 3 months for my new job and I do not know if my new employer will hold the ob offer much longer.I do not know how other nursing programs work but I cant really say that WGU has prepare as much as my own professional background, finding information on my own, and the now 5 months that i have been preparing for the Nclex. Mentally, financially and emotionally, I DO NOT FEEL READY TO TAKE THE NCLEX. I would not recommend filling out some of the financial aid scholarships links at WGU, its spam. They do break up your payment every term into 4 less painful, monthly automatic withdraws.
Before going through WGU consider: #1. WGU is NOT an accredited institution, only their programs are accredited. That's good, but it is FAR MORE important that an institution be accredited. If it is not, then the majority of your work (your degree) will NOT be recognized by other colleges. #2. WGU boasts about the percentage and employment of WGU grads, but does not report how many of those people were ALREADY employed in their chosen career prior to attending WGU. In summation, my opinion is that WGU is a bit more like a second tier trade school. It isn't horrible, it isn't expensive (relatively speaking) but you would be better off going through Udacity since their courses have well-known industry backing.
I am a current student of WGU. Let me share my experience. As any organization, WGU have pros and cons Pros: They assign u a degree mentor who stay with u during the whole degree. My degree mentor is amazing. She is so helpful. Try to help me as much as she can. Always contacting people in my behalf. Provide a lot of info. She there for emotional support as well. Each course has few course mentors they will assign u one. They also very helpful, they go out of their way to help u. Sometime they answer u during their days off. Cons: Academically: how they set the course? They give you the book and tell you knock yourself out with a little resources. No human lectures. Youll have no idea what to focus on and the course mentor doesnt know these things or they never saw the real test to give you an idea about what to focus on and whats important in the book Quizzes: In the end Or during Every chapter they give you quizzes that has nothing to do with the final exam, not in the same format not even related to the final test it only try to measure your knowledge about the subject. Then it comes only one realistic test to practice on, the pre-assessment. If you fail the the final exam even within one point there is no compromise with a paper or extra credit project to make up for this one point. All the questions in the final test or scenario-based questions they dont give you a direct question. If they messed up on The final they wont fix their mistake they will tell you poops sorry but you have to redo the test. The class that Im taking right now they told me it will be 66 questions and I found out during the test that they increase the number of the questions without notifying me before hand so I had to rush through the test and I end up failing with two points only. Of course they tell me we sorry its our fault but there is nothing we can do youll have to take it again. The system of the college: all the people that you have access to, have no power whatsoever except for giving you advice or support you emotionally. If you ask for the dean of student or anyone with power they will tell you, no such a person exist. its a mechanical system that has no human emotion at all. Degree mentor: they have no power over anything, so if u encounter any problems, all what they can do is to send an email to some department who they dont know anyone in I really do not recommend this university unless you have no other choice
I liked the classes but am having a hard time getting my special ed. Credential. Honestly the Masters degree is worthless if I cant get a credential in my home state. The credential process they advertise is not what they tell you after you graduate.
I'm only a third of the way through the program and the only reason I'm struggle through trying desperately to finish is that my hospital is picking up most of my tuition. This program is only for those who need the letters after your name, nothing else. You would think this program is still in development by the inconsistencies and general vagueness that all communications from the university and course documents are written in. The first course alone had 3 different instruction sets for the final paper, which really cannot be define as a paper but rather 4 writing assignment chopped together with an introduction and a conclusion, and then it had a totally different set of parameters being used to grade it on the grading rubric. Everything within the course of studies for the classes are hard to find and unorganized, and this is somebody whose taken online classes before for higher certifications. Other colleges may require more discussion boards and time consuming busy work, which WGU does not, but I would still say explore those other options.
When reading the reviews of this school, the astute observer will note that students either love or hate their experience there. There is a minimal amount of ambivalence expressed and that is because for the pragmatist or the driven, the school is a Mecca. There is about as much opportunity for intellectual inquiry at WGU as can be found in your local Walmart. If you are willing to completely enmesh yourself in concrete, simplistic busy work and have a modicum amount of discipline, you can work your way through this morass in record time. Indeed, on a productive day even I was able to complete 8 credits worth of courses in an afternoon. Therein lies the conundrum. Do you want to learn or do you want to sport an additional few letters at the end of your name? If what you aspire to is simply an accredited degree, WGU may be just your type of place. Jump through a bunch of hoops, avoid any intellectual or meaningful interaction and you are there! Unfortunately, in today's increasingly narcissistic society, it is the appearance of learning that is valued, more than the experience. WGU excels in this type of environment. Classes are nothing more than what appears to be random tasks, evaluated by nameless robots, with whom you are precluded from interaction. Your assigned "mentors" can only counsel you, they have no actual ability to determine curricula nor can they modify grading. This dis-connect makes for a frustrating and de-humanizing experience that I would imagine, would be of minimal concern to the individual focused on that plaque on the wall. Don't misunderstand me: the assignments are not necessary easy. Often they are written in ambiguous, pretentious language that practically requires a translator to deconstruct. This is the hallmark of superficiality: if it looks complicated it must be intelligent. There is no creativity, no push for greater understanding or challenging the status quo. The instruction offered at WGU more closely resembles training than actual education. Bottom line: if you are smart but shallow, go for it.
My honest review & experience. Where do I begin? I enrolled in this school mainly because for self-paced & tuition. Can't argue with that. My goal was to graduate in the timely manner that fits with my schdule. However, my entire experience is nothing but frustrating. From the start, the enrollment counselor was extremely annoying. Talked to me like I was in kindergarden. The weekly mandatory calls & appointments is a hassle. The financial aid totally changed my package plan without telling me. I would have never attended this school if I knew I wouldn't qualify for the maximum amount as stated by FAFSA. I know how FAFSA works. WGU just has a weird policy that caused this. I called financial aid to fix this, they told me two seperate information. Once I called them out, they didn't even knew what they were talking about. I felt deceived! The projects were a nightmare. I haven't worked so hard in my classes, which is great. However, my projects is always being sent back for revision. There is no clear instructions on how to actually execute the projects. You have to meet their specific standards pass. It's not like you can turn it in, get graded a C or B, & move on. My projects were beyond competent according to personal professors I know. They were amazing on how this school was structured & the difficulty of the projects. Lastly, I found out that the professor doesn't really do the grading. An evaluator goes through your project, see if you meet all the requirements, & to pass. My projects blows many other students projects that I have compared too. Now I am working three times as harder just to pass. Never had this much issues compared to other schools. I am at the point to just hurry, finish, & move on. To be fair, the only pro's this school offer (compared to other online schools I've been), is a nice clean platform, I did learn actually learn "something", self-paced, & tuition. Cons: Don't trust financial aid, weekly calls & appointments tend to be annoying, enrollment counselors can suck (if you are lucky not to get an enrollment counselor as I did who was rude by the way), projects are not evaluted by professors, no clear instructions on how to execute or do the projects, & constant amount of revisions.
YOUR CREDITS AT WGU FOR THE MOST PART, WILL NOT BE RECOGNIZED BY MOST UNIVERSITIES. Example, lower level electives are 50-70% ok to transfer from WGU, but all major courses will be given zero credit. SO please understand unlike any other university, you can never leave and go to another school unless you are OK with starting over and paying again.
This is a terrible school. If you know everything and just need to take a test then you are going to do okay. If you EVER have a question about anything you can forget it. If you ever need help you will be told: "Sign up and take the class at another university and then trade it in here for credit." "CLEP it." "Take DDST/DANTES." "Get a tutor." I have never received any help for anything from the university and only speak to my mentor for some reason once a week and all he or she does is approve assessments for me to take. Unless I can get approval and here we are. Again. I cannot even tell you how many mentors I have had. Maybe 10 at this point? I wish I had never started this program here. I would never recommend this program or school to anyone unless you clepped all of the non-IT stuff and just took the certifications. I don't know what any of the other programs are like. I had plans to go on and get my Master's but I hate school so much at this point that I would rather drink poison and have pretty much decided maybe in 20 or 30 years...never again for now though.
According to the FAFSA information on this school. The graduation rate is currently 14% for the Master's program. I received my ADN doing traditional clinicals and chose the video lecture option (as opposed to in class lectures. I received my BSN through WGU entirely online (There four-year graduation rate is 18.2) http://www.collegeresults.org/search1a.aspx?institutionid=104717 I have been a self-directed learner my entire life and am no stranger to this type of program. The problem with this program is that it functions on a Disaggregate model. What's that you ask? Simply explained, they have one group of people who design their course work. A separate group of people who design the tests and yet a third group who grade papers. So, what's the problem you ask? The people who design the content have no communication with the people who decide the test questions. The people who design the test questions do not look at the course content and, the people who grade papers do not talk to the students or the instructors. In short, one hand does not wash the other. I have taken one class in particular, and it seems that the test preparers and the course content developers do not at all agree on what the focus of this course should be. You will never be able to pass the OA if you are relying on the course content alone. For objective assessments (OA) many of us are used to taking a practice test and then being provided with the answers to the questions you got wrong or a rationale for the questions. This does not happen a WGU. The score you get is the score you get. You have no way of knowing what you got right, what you got wrong and there is no rational provided. Furthermore, If you go to your instructor and ask for guidance on the test, you will be told that they also do not have access to the testing material and therefore can not guide you in resolving any academic shortcomings. So, what happens when the course material does not speak to the material on the exam and the student has nowhere to turn for clarification? The students fail due to lack of adequate support in the content material and you get a four-year graduation rates of 7.3% and 14% graduation rate overall! WGU touts that it is a competency base learning program. This means that if you already have the knowledge base through prior experience great! You take the test, pass, and move on to the next class. If you do not, pull up a seat, read through the course material and we will get you there. Unfortunately, if course preparers, and test prepares are prevented from communicating and don't look at one another's content, Then you run the risk of each group going in two different directions with the student stuck in the middle and the instructors trying to build a bridge for the gap. The problem is that by preventing the instructors from being aware of the testing material, the instructors may build a bridge to nowhere that the student has no choice but to blindly follow. This desegregated style creates a barrier to learning and fails active learners in their pursuit to expand their knowledge base.
