The program took me three years to complete but it got me a job with a top company. Every step of the way they make sure that you excel professionally and academically. In this degree program, I not only obtained the degree, but I passed a number of certification exams that most colleges do not even know about. These certifications have proved to be valuable to potential employers. This school is accredited, and deserves some serious respect.
WGU let me get my master's degree and to fulfill my dreams. Without WGU and the online experience to do classes late at night or whenever, I would have never been able to it!! The price was the lowest around, great overall support and feedback from some great educators made getting my master's much easier than I had ever expected.
I moved over to WGU after I fell into deep debt with a different college. I was paying for the name of the school. Think about it, the most popular schools are typically, more expensive. I am finishing my degree with WGU and feel that it is basically the same degree. To date, I have not had an employer tell me "I see you are finishing up your degree at WGU. Sorry, we can't hire you". I'm sure there are employers out there that might say something like that, but I don't really want to work for a company that compares and contrasts accredited schools anyway. Really, it's not there place to judge me based on where I earned my degree. A degree is a degree. It's the same piece of paper. WGU's paper is just waaay cheaper.
If you are still reading, please note that I have had one issue. The graders that work for WGU (third party I think) are not consistent at all. They may leave comments one day, and tell you to fix the paper. Then after turning it in, they may leave comments the next time telling you to fix something completely different, and still won't pass it. That can get really annoying and is by far, the worst that I have seen out of WGU. Other than that, financial aid runs smoothly, the mentors are nice and professional...and the cost is 1/5 a semester than what I was paying before :)
WGU is an amazing school for anyone interested in pursuing a degree online.
Keep in mind that it is completely self paced, so if you are not a good self motivator than this is NOT the school for you.
With that being said, I LOVE this school. My enrollment counselor was very friendly and helpful, without being pushy at all. The financial aid department is very helpful and the application process was simple. The tuition is very affordable. My student mentor is wonderful and motivating- I actually look forward to her calls! There are plenty of resources to help you gain the knowledge you need to finish the classes. And the tests are straightforward and fair.
I love that I can do my work at any hour of the day and anywhere that I have internet access. I am a single parent and usually end up working on school late at night after I put my son to bed. I don't have to pay for babysitters or daycare, which makes this education even more affordable.
I got my B.A in education from WGU and it was the best choice I have ever made. I had years of teaching experience (pre-k) but no degree so I couldnt teach older students. I went to WGU and was a lazy student. Now I see that! I felt online would be easier and I was wrong. It took me 3 years to complete my program. I could have finished in 2 had I applied myself. The school gave me all the support I needed. The information was all present.
Yes, task stream can be annoying, and the graders are tough. There are task I have resubmitted 4 times before passing. However, any school would be tough and you may not get the chance to try again on task in a traditional school. I am super happy with my experience I just wish they offered a psych program for my masters!
I have been a student of WGU for a while now and due to some unforeseen personal circumstances that caused me to have not just 1 but 3 surgeries I was put into a "suspended student status" meaning that I was no longer able to get financial aid. So I had to withdraw until I had the funds for one more term in which I was told that if I completed that term 100% accomplished then I would be returned to "student in good standing" and would then be able to return to obtaining financial aid to complete my degree.
I withdrew and saved up enough money to return for that one more term, but sometime during that term "the rules changed" but I, nor my mentor was advised of this change and I would have to take and additional 5 credits to be able to be eligible for financial aid. That equals to at least 2 more classes. Had I been apprised of this "change" then I would have done everything in my power to add those two more classes but even my mentor advised me not to, that I would be just fine. At the end of term I was notified that I was still in "suspended status" and I wouldn't be getting any financial aid to continue.
I then tried to appeal the decision and was denied without so much as an explanation. So here I am without a degree $20,000 in debt no chance of continuing on with WGU (I do like the classes and the school curriculum and the format. I was very successful and would like to stay with this school) but due to lack of communication on the administration side of it. I am S.O.L., as it were.
I am a current student and I love the curriculum. It relates to my career very well. I gain ideas and knowledge to use in my classroom.
However, Taskstream graders suck sometimes. My first two portfolio assignments went well. The first was meets and the second was exceeds. However, the third I just submitted was needs revision.
The grader stated that part of the work was missing. So, I went back and highlighted the information that was "missing." Now it's a meets all of a sudden.
The graders do not know how to grade. You never know who is going to get your work/paper and how they are going to grade it. That is the only down side to WGU!
AFTER SEVERAL MONTHS OF GATHERING INFORMATION AND SENDING ALL TRANSCRIPTS IT GOT DOWN TO WHAT I NEEDED TO DO NEXT AND THE STAFF ADVISED ME THAT THE CLASS REQUIREMENTS HAD CHANGED LAST WEEK AND I NEEDED TO TAKE YET ANOTHER ANATOMY CLASS AT A DIFFERENT SCHOOL TO QUALIFY FOR ADMISSION TO WGU.
I HAD ALL MY TRANSCRIPTS SENT IN A TIMELY MANNER BUT HOW CONVENIENT THAT ANOTHER CLASS WAS INDICATED JUST A WEEK PRIOR AND NO NOTIFICATION FROM THEM JUST THAT THEY NEED TO TAKE CARE OF THE SIGNED UP STUDENTS RATHER THAN POTENTIAL STUDENTS FIRST. THIS IS OK BUT THE TRANSFER CREDITS STOPS THE MINUTE YOU SIGN THE DOTTED LINE. SO I WOULD NEED TO TAKE CLASSES I ALREADY HAD AGAIN. NO THANK YOU. THIS IS NOT A FAST TRACT BUT A WAY TO GET MONEY AND MORE MONEY OUT OF YOU.
The first thing I want to point out is that WGU is not for everyone. You have to be a self-starter, and you have to want to push yourself. Competency based units is an amazing concept. I take a pre-assessment and once I pass that I get to take my final for the objective exams. If you treat this school as a full-time job which some students do, you have the opportunity to go from no credits to your BA is around a year and a half. The other awesome thing about WGU is that you pay per semester, if I can pass 15 classes in one term, there is no additional cost.
For people who don't understand the mentor program, I have one mentor who calls me every Thursday to check on my progress and help push me to reach my goals. You also have a course mentor for every class, if you get stuck you let the course mentor know, and they respond very quickly to your request. I can tell you that in my first three months at WGU, I have racked up 35 credits, and that is working 8-10 hours a day studying. I find it nice that you can test from your home for most finals, obviously through webcam proxy.
The classes that have performance-based testing, you hand in the assignment, and a grader will not only grade your paper, they will tell you what is missing if anything is missing from the assignment. This is nice because most of my papers if they get sent back needing revisions, I know what I need to fix and quickly make the adjustments and send the assignment right back into be graded again. The cost of your education will be far less than other universities, and you will be able to accelerate if you have the time and are willing to put in the effort. This school was the best decision that I have ever made, and I encourage anyone who is looking at colleges to give WGU a shot.
Their course of study does not follow a specific order, the instructions on tasks (test or graded material) are vague, they claim many resources, but the resources have little use, Course mentors are not permitted to aid the students, and any problems brought to their attention is swept under a rug.... they tell you to go elsewhere....
Contacting the Board members is impossible... operators and student services try to reroute you every place else.
If you have money and time to waste... WGU is the place for you... all the hype of the certs are useless because if and when you need help... you are on your own.
