"CSUN has a great credential program. They have a 2 year program for those that want more flexibility and they have a 1 year program for those who want to get it done quickly. The one year program has a neurodevelopmental methodology teaching focus. This is great because it will help future teachers be able to reach all kinds of different learning abilities. For this program, students are placed in schools for student teaching in the valley while the other program places students in other areas of Los Angeles. CSUN is also well known for its teaching credential program and is highly recognized by many in the industry."

"Very good program but really hard to get into, also there are very few Universities that have this type of program"

"The affordability of the graduate program helped me further my education without suffering financially, but the costs of traveling to present my work at conferences (which was very crucial to the degree) and further my knowledge, unfortunately came out of pocket."

  • Degree: Creative Writing
"The Creative Writing program at CSUN has been completely life changing. The people in the program are fantastic, though the university at large does not seem to get what is done in it. That is more the fault of the university administration than anything else... the department is very supportive of all the students."

"I am currently still in the program. The Pros: The campus is very close. The staff is knowledgeable and willing to help. Students are diverse and hard working. Professors are quick to respond to questions when outside of the class room. The Cons: The graduate program is not taken as seriously as other programs from different Universities in California."

"While pursuing a Master's degree in English, I was able to simultaneously take various science courses to completed my medical school prerequisites. I was also offered several teaching jobs on campus ranging from English to Chemistry which helped establish my professional life and experiences. The graduate English program also offers a competitive Teacher's Associate program which, for students who are accepted, provides graduate students with valuable "in the classroom" time. The class structure is extremely flexible and encourages experimentation with pedagogical practices and technology. CSUN also offers plenty of opportunities for students to participate in conferences, volunteer activities, and some readings. While CSUN offered many valuable opportunities for personal growth, it no longer offers a "thesis" option for English students that are pursuing an emphasis in creative writing. This can be a major con for students who are using the CSUN Master's program as a stepping stone to MFA programs or PhD programs that expect an MA student to have completed a thesis. While CSUN does offer a Capstone Project as an alternative, many universities will not consider this as academically rigorous as a final thesis."

  • Degree: Communications
"This program has an excellent, supportive faculty who really care about the students. They want to make sure you're understanding the material and excelling. They will go beyond what's expected of them. The workload is intense, which is good- this is grad school and you should feel challenged. Students discover they are capable of far more than they realized when they first walked into Manzanita Hall. It is a commuter school, so networking or socializing with fellow grad students is difficult. Some commute as much as two hours just for this education. Overall, CSUN has a great Communication Studies program. I'm proud to go to this university."

"The pros of the mathematics program at Cal Northridge are that it is challenging, afforadable, and the schedule is flexible. The cons of the mathematics program at Cal State Northridge are that you don't get much support from peers and that the math department doesn't use much technology."

  • Degree: History
"I love CSUN's History graduate program although as with any graduate program there are admittedly some shortfalls. There is a lack of feeling of support from some faculty members yet there are indeed also faculty who are willing to support with the students in terms of academic support, providing scholarship opportunities, and extracurricular scholarly activities. Not much research internship opportunities offered by the school in comparison to other schools. Nonetheless they do host interesting lectures and have faculty that are very interested in their subjects. Overall I love the program."

"The only con about my particular program is that its an off-campus program so I cant always access the things available to on campus students simply because of distance. Other than that I am more than satisfied with my program. My professors are kind, accessible and knowledgeable. This program has made me grow not only as a person but as a social worker. Its truly a beautiful program."

"The best experience at California State University Northridge is the student diversity it offers to all its students. The academic excellence also triggers great student involvement towards success. However, the lack of faculty support and division in the administration towards their own personal interest, hurts the environment at California State University Northridge."

"The Pros: The amount of help and support is extremely great at this school, you really get a one on one attention from your professors in the department of geological sciences. The professors are also highly knowledgeable, showing a lot of enthusiasm in students learning. The Cons: Insufficient funds for the science and math departments."
