"I truly loved my time at Montclair State University. I attended and lived at the university from 2004-2009 which was an interesting time. My freshman year most of the students were commuters and most of the residents went home on the weekends. However, there was an increase of residents that created "triple" rooms out of double rooms and they even rented out hotel rooms. The university was expanding, they opened up College Hall which is a huge, beautiful building for lectures, classes and a computer lab. They also opened the Rec Center which has an indoor pool, gym and courts. By my last few semesters I noticed a change in the social and recreation scene on campus. There are now several new dorms and the university continues to expand. As far as the location Montclair is great! It is very close to NYC and there is train station on campus, only drawback is the train does not run on nights and weekends. Montclair is also an awesome town there is tons of delicious, trendy, healthy "foodie" restaurants and a hip downtown; not to mention parks and other activities. I still frequent the town to this day. As far as the education, I went to Montclair because at the time I wanted to be a teacher and is known as the best college for education in the state and one of the best nationwide. I majored in Psychology and received my teaching certificate for 6-12 grade Social Studies. I found the classes to be informative and interesting. Thankfully I have always been a good student, I did not find the classes overly challenging. However, I had friends who majored in the sciences and they had a different experiences. The most challenging part was learning how to be self-disciplined and independent. I think that would the same any where you go. Montclair has a great amount of clubs to join and greek life as well. I met some amazing people who are still my best friends after a decade. I lived in several dorms and ended up in the Village apartments for the last year and half. That was great because it was more private and allowed us to feel more grown up. I worked as a desk assistant and an office assistant and it was a convenient way to earn some spending cash. Overall I really loved Montclair State University. I think it is a quality, affordable education. One note on affordability, I think it is wise to live at home if you can, you have tons of time to grow up. Also consider getting an associates from a community college first. This is cost effective and can help you decide if college really is for you. I found that the freshman and sophomore classes were huge and narrowed out in the latter years. If you do not complete a 4 year school you don't receive a degree and you still have the bill/loans. Making a shorter, cheaper commitment makes sense. This will also allow you to get your "gen -eds" out of the way and discover if there is another subject that you might want to major in. One of my best friends did this and earned the same degree as me. Good luck, good learning and have fun!"

"Great school, with many options for majors. Lacked in individual guidance though."

"I enjoyed my undergraduate experience but there were not nearly enough research opportunities for a serious student of biology. If you have plans to go into research, go elsewhere."

"Class sizes are reasonable. Workload is manageable, even with a full time job. All the professors I have had, either have worked or currently work in the field they are teaching."

  • Degree: Communications (Speech Pathology)
"The Communication Sciences and Disorders Graduate Program at Montclair State University is a gem. The classes themselves are located off-campus - in the same building as the speech-language pathology and audiology clinic - so campus safety and parking are excellent. The staff and professors are not only intelligent and inspiring, they are also caring and encouraging of all the students. For the speech-language pathology Masters degree, clinic work begins less than one year into the rigorous program. While the level of academic and clinical expectations are intense, the supervisors offer the support and constructive criticism necessary to hone respectful and knowledgeable clinicians. The diversity in the program is small, which may be due to the nature of the profession; but the small class sizes encourage greater student-teacher interaction and more family-like environment. Administrative work from the main campus, especially regarding financial aid, work at a slower pace than other institutions. This, however, is removed from the CSND department."

"Pros are that the Nutrition program offers a Dietetic certificate so you can get your Masters at the same time as working towards the RD certification."

"Courses implement hands on experience, which allows the students to put into practice the theoretical knowledge. Organization and rotation of the professors could be the biggest con."

"Montclair State is a widely acclaimed university, that has gained recognition by providing their graduates with a quality education that truly prepares them for their selected fields of study. Even with such a large population of students, each one is treated as an individual with specific needs. Counselors and advisers are always available and eager to help. It truly feels like a community."

"Pros: Professors at the university are very supportive and kind. The quality of education is highly recommended. Cons: Parking space is not enough for students, particulary in the morning. They have few scholarshps for international students."

"There's been a lot of turnover the past few years in the program which has caused some disruptions, but the faculty knows what they're doing and is seeking to make it a good experience for the students."

"Professors are readily available always, never had a professor who was too busy to talk about any situation. Very friendly atmosphere, just overpriced for the experience. The Finical Aid office is awful to get a hold of, and the network issues as of recently have been off the walls. Beautiful campus, great library however. Main issue of the campus is the parking is absurd, even if you have a parking pass. Also, the trains do not run on the weekends, which limits your transportation if you live on campus or if you need to be there on the weekend."

"I went back to school so that I would be more marketable to employers since I was having difficulty finding a full time position and I did just that! Montclair is known for the practices in teacher preparation. I was able to quickly finish this program and all the classes were at night so I could continue working part time and take classes. The only draw back I found to this program was that there were not many teachers and I had a few teachers numerous times. The teachers were wonderful, but I felt like I was not learning anything new after I took the professor a few times. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone looking to strengthen their skill set in inclusive education."

"I feel that the amount of graduate classes offered are very limited. the times and days the classes are offered are minimal. it is hard to schedule work and classes when the only class times available are from 5:30pm-8pm. I would benefit more from having more options available throughout the day. other than the classes offered, the program is put together very nicely. the professors are eager to teach and help the students learn. the workload is distributed evenly."

"I met so many efficient professors in my program. They are very kind and supportive. I'm still in the course so I can't say if I can receive enough career support in the future yet. The surrounding area is very good and peaceful. A bad thing is the school does not have enough scholarships."

"The graduate program has many great things about it. The Design Department itself is very diversified. There are many talented professors. The environment is very positive and nurturing. The only thing that is a con is the cost of tuition and fees and supplies."
