"Northwestern is a great university; it has a fantastic library, top of the range faculty and the learning environment is generally good. However, Campus transportation especially on weekends is not as smooth as it relies on the Chicago city transportation only. NU buses do not operate on weekends. Given that Evanston is expensive to live in, a number of grad students live in Chicago which makes it necessary to have affordable and reliable transportation to and from campus throughout the week."

"Northwestern University's Department of History is outstanding. The faculty provide a high level of education and the course work is rigorous. Evanston has a high cost of living and many grad students choose to live in Chicago because campus housing has disadvantages."

"Northwestern is a very competitive school to get into, but I don't think the atmosphere is competitive. At least in my department, other grad students and the faculty are generally very supportive of your work, and nobody's really out to get anyone or make you look stupid. Overall, the academic environment has a positive feel."

"The campus facilities (libraries, etc.) are fantastic and the campus itself is beautiful and located within a vibrant area. If you are a self-starter you will thrive in Northwestern's environment. The faculty is collectively superb and generally at the very top of their respective fields, along with recent additions of brilliant young scholars. The Funding package is, compared with other schools, incredible and permits grad students to live comfortably in a city as expensive as Chicago while pursuing their interests."

"The only significant grievances I've had with the program here is that the graduate student population in my department (history) is not very diverse."
