"San Joaquin Delta is a pretty good community college. They have relevant study programs and a number of student services that you won't find elsewhere. I'm impressed with the pantry, cafeteria, transfer help, career help, etc. However, their counseling office is useless. For 2023-2024 school start, they have booked too many appointments in advance and now they only accept walk-ins. The walk-ins are competing for time with the appointments. Here is the kick: there are 2, maybe 3 counselors on site any day except Wednesday. When you go for counseling without an appointment, the person at the counter will tell you the wait is 1-1.5 hours, no matter how many people are ahead of you. In reality, you will be there for minimum 2 hours. Also, their athletes get priority in the afternoon. Heck, the person at the counter can't even tell you if they will be able to see you that day because it depends on how things go. Whoever is managing the counseling office is incompetent, and whoever is managing the counselors should not be doing this job. As an organization that has been operating for many years, by this time they have enough information to do an analysis of: 1) how long appointments take for freshman vs sophomore vs others (a math student could do this fairly easily) 2) what are their peak times vs slow times, per day, per month, per year 3) which degrees take the most counseling time 3) how many counselors do they need to clear and prevent future backlog 4) if they don't have enough counselors, who can they cross-train (there was a number of admin staff just chillin at their computer) 5) estimate how much time each person will wait. Without this information, they are shooting in the dark and are proving they are incompetent as an organization. I don't believe it's the whole organization but counseling office is the main contact for students. If you can't manage that effectively, how can we expect you to manage other aspects of the college? One other note: They will provide you a map of the campus without a legend. Student Services is marked as DeRicco building, not Student Services". If you don't know this, you will get lost. I hope they mark the map for future students."

"Good Community College. The classes were okay decent size and so were the instructors but just like at any other school you have to work for your grade. Not all teachers are perfect but at least they teach the material and prepare you to transfer or get you ready for your career. I was able to graduate in 2 years with 4 associates and 4 certificates. If I can do it with 2 kids so can you."
