"Pros: - Guaranteed financial support (in form of tuition waiver and teaching assistantship) - Variety of research areas in the department - Devoted faculty, competitive in their fields of research - Availability of in-house instrumentation for most of my work - Helpful staff Cons: - Few opportunities for locally based internships - Air quality issues inside chemistry building - Even if fluent in English, international students are required to take too many English courses (reading, etc.), unless they hold a degree from a US institution"

"I'm extraordinarily happy here, I think, though it strikes me that one's mentor can make or break one's experience in graduate school."

"Iowa City revolves around the university and, despite being relatively small by city standards, is much more liberal than most locations in the Midwest. The downtown area around campus is full of local restaurants, cafes, a great independent book store, and lots of unique shops. The Arts & Humanities are under threat here, as they are at every university, but they are also one of the strengths of the University. The Iowa Writers' Workshop, one of the top creative writing programs in the country, brings lots of writers to the area for readings, etc. and contributes to a general feeling that writing and the arts are valued by this community. Because this is a Research 1 university, many departments view (undergraduate) teaching as a low priority for graduate students as well as professors and this has contributed to what I view as inadequate formal training for teaching -- although there are certainly many opportunities to learn by experience. The History dept. is very collegial among and between faculty and graduate students. Individual advisor experiences vary, but most graduate students feel they have a supportive and healthy relationship with their advisors, even if some professors are less available than others."

"Iowa City is a great place to live. The University of Iowa is not bad. I certainly know of better graduate programs. But its fine. I will still get a doctorate. I wouldn't change where I am because Iowa City is a great place, but in terms of the university I could take it or leave it. Luckily, I have a great adviser. That is the key. Find a good adviser and stick with him/her."

"I am in the Journalism Masters Program. The program is seeing a lot of changes, and I do not have positive feelings about many of them. I obtained my undergraduate from the University of Iowa as well, and have seen many changes."
