"UMBC offers a wide range of graduate programs. The Music program is staffed by people who really care about student goals. I have been told several times that they are there to do whatever it takes to help me pursue my dreams. They are a bit disorganized due to a recent move, but I'm daily functions will be back to normal shortly."

"I truly enjoyed my time at Umbc. I participated in two programs with supportive professors and mentors all looking to help me succeed."

"Pros: The student to faculty ratio is ideal giving students the opportunity to have quality one-on-one time with professors. The student population is diverse. The quality of education you get for your money is great. The professors have a top-notch educational background. Downtown Baltimore is 30 minutes away, Washington D.C. is 45 minutes away. Cons: There is not much to do in the immediate surrounding area if you do not have a car. This should not be an issue for most graduate students. The financial aid office does not do much to help with applying for private scholarships."

"Developing (already there in plenty of disciplines and aspects) into a very strong research university. I feel like I'm pursuing a worthwhile degree with clear connections to future employment and career goals. Program has strong connections to these organizations, making the transition out of graduate school and into the world much easier. Great graduate student support structures. One of the most enjoyable and friendly work environments I've ever come across."

"Pros: Affordability - cheaper than most of the colleges in the area, class size - easy to make friends/get to know classmates and professors, quality of education is very good for the price, classes are exciting and challenging, I have not had any problems with any administrative tasks that I've needed to take care of (financial aid/registration etc.) I take my classes at a satellite campus so I cant really comment on the Baltimore area but the satellite is really nice - everything is brand new, the hours are great and the people are friendly"

"Pros: Has affiliation with John's Hopkins hospital. Cons: Shady grove campus offers its lectures via podcast."

"The graduate program is very competitive, but there are plenty of professors and other students who are more than willing to help you through your studies. Not to mention, the program will really prepare you for your career once you graduate. The only con is the area. Baltimore is relatively safe, but there are areas that you should steer clear of if you can help it."

"The school's academic programs in one of the best in the country for social work students. The faculty and staff are professionals and very helpful."

"My program is Applied Sociology at UMBC which is one of the most diverse schools in the country. The program itself offers a plethora of classes geared towards the non-profit sector, government work, and gerontology; all with practical application in mind so that our graduates can find jobs that reflect their choice of discipline. Our school is well known within the area as well, and when jobs open up often they send one of our administrators an email which gets forwarded to us, meaning even before we graduate they are trying to hire out of our graduate school. Their admissions is fair, the classes are informative, and within reason they do their best to make sure we graduate as high quality individuals. The cons are few; pushing papers through at this school can be troublesome, and classes which are blessedly small fill up quickly but with limited sections of the class often something has to be taken later due to a lack of space. Honestly though, this is a wonderful program at a wonderful institution."
