"Program Overview: The University of Michigan-Flint Education Specialist program is a world-class, part-time program. The stimulating and challenging environment is essential for students with strong organizational skills. Its design targets students highly capable of sustained intellectual work. Participating students persevere, possess a strong discipline, are resourceful, and build a strong relational capacity in the field of education. Strengths: • I truly learned the power of time management! • Rigor and relevance • Enhanced research skills and scholarly writing • Cohort-style; collaboration; interaction with faculty and peers; cooperation; communication • Professional and personal development • Group projects/presentations: each person taking responsibility, yet you still have the advantages of a shared experience • Accountability • Technology-infused approach with once a month class sessions • Flexibility • Emphasized life-long learning • Maximized use of educational resources • Appreciation for diversity of individuals in cohort • Global perspective in some activities • Exemplars presented in understanding the parameters in major assignments • Practicum Coordinator serves in the role of a mentor • Long term professional and financial benefits Weaknesses: • Extremely time-consuming, especially in the first two semesters • Intense; at times overly stressful, especially in the first two semesters • Discussion Boards were not as interactive as I had hoped; I would have enjoyed more “Think Tank” occurrences with this interactive tool. • Flexibility for out of city/state students; How will U of M-Flint progress in pursuing the attraction of commuting students? Final Thoughts: This 18-month cohort program deepened my knowledge and expertise in the concentrated area of curriculum and instruction. I am truly grateful for this rewarding experience!"
