"I'm a student in UMKC's six year combined BA/MD program, and my university experience has been one of clashing highs and lows. PROS: - The program is rather unique in offering the combined BA/MD program. Most medical students will get far more utility from their medical education, and this program helps get undergrad classes quickly out of your way. - The main campus is both beautiful and functional. The main campus is entirely walkable, and the architecture is aesthetically-pleasing and modern enough to be practical. - The university is far more accepting of diversity than could be reasonably expected in The Midwest. The university consistently ranks nationally for it's LGBT programs, and the school's medical programs frequently host over 50% non-white students. Gender balance within the healthcare schools is at least 50% women. People of any background will feel comfortable at UMKC, no questions asked. CONS: - The major criticism anyone could make about UMKC overall is that it truly feels like a school which was built for on-campus students, yet the vast majority of students commute daily. This frequently leaves the main campus feeling vacant any time after dinner. - While the campus itself feels cozy and safe, dangerous street corners can be found within walking distance. Reports of on-campus crime are more frequent than is desirable, and renting an off-campus property is a lesson in dodging crime-heavy areas. - While the campus' cheery blue-and-gold try valiantly to support a greater sense of school spirit, there's a prevailing feeling that the students here mostly attend for the degree. School sports have a meager turn out, and few truly identify as Roos.Read Less"

"Good Program overall. The campus is pretty safe, we have security and blue phones everywhere. Bad things rarely happen. Could use more diversity. Our medical program is dominated by Indian Americans. We have a great faculty and staff. They respond to student emails and complaints very quickly. They are always around and accessible, they try their best to be helpful and our school offers a variety of career and financial counseling options."

"Overall, the quality of education is excellent! The teachers are great and love to teach. The workload can be strenuous at times, but that is to be expected from any grad program. One con is that there doesn't seem to be much financial aid available to students. Added to the high cost and that makes for an expensive education. However, it is a really GOOD education."

"I am at the Columbia Campus of UMKC's School of Pharmacy and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to become a pharmacist. The Columbia atmosphere is great and the professional education I'm receiving is the best in the state."

"Pros of the graduate program are that the faculty are easily accessible and always willing to help when needed. Also the multiple off-site locations that courses can be taken. One negative is the amount of work that is required outside of the classroom, but I assume that is the case with most graduate programs. Overall, I think the program is great!"

"I'm currently in my third year of the 6 year combined BA/MD program. I've really enjoyed the program so far and have learned a lot. With a couple exceptions, the teaching has been excellent. There's lots of opportunities for research and extracurricluar activities. They have a big focus on primary care and serving the underserved. There's a lot of work to do, even from the first year of the program but it is very managable and I have a lot of time to do other activities. Both campuses are very safe and have a strong security presence. Although there isn't always a lot going on on campus, there's always lots of events and activities to do within the city. There's festivals every weekend and lots of museums, restaurants, shopping, and clubs in the area. Although a car isn't required, it is very helpful to have as Kansas City is very spread out and the public transportation here isn't too great (although it is free for students). Faculty here is very friendly and will always take time to talk with you. One unique aspect of this program is that each student is assigned to a small docent group which meets once a week to see patients with a "docent" physician. This begins in the first year and is a great way to connect with other students and a physician. The school's USMLE scores are average with the rest of the country and we were just recently reaccredited by the LCME. Graduates match into every speciality there is, it all just depends on how hard you work. The school itself is not going to prevent anyone from getting into the speciality they want. Two things that are very important to think about before joining this program is whether you are sure you want to be a physician and whether you are willing to work hard from the start. If you aren't sure you want to be a doctor or you want to screw around your first couple years in college, it might be a better idea to go a different route. But if you're serious about being a doctor, this is a great program.Read Less"
