"I applied to UVA on a lark, because previously, I'd only planned on applying to four programmes in Ind/Sys E (Michigan, Georgia Tech, Wisconsin, and Purdue), and felt as though I should do another. UVA was the first to let me in (so did Michigan and Wisconsin), and they offered full support (which is rare for a Masters). That's why I chose to attend UVA. I am, however, quite happy with my choice. The faculty I've found is generally top rate, and I certainly feel I've gained both a quality education, as well as a solid alumni network. The biggest downsides of UVA (and Charlottesville) are these: 1) It's a smaller city, so anything around the University tends to shutter during breaks. 2) Public transit is pretty good, and better than I expected for a city of less than 50k, however, in order to do anything in the local area, you pretty much need a car. 3) C-ville is great if you're an undergrad, or if you're already with a family, but as a single, young professional, it's definitely limited. 4 (and this is department specific)) Because Systems at UVA is a reasonably small department, the course offerings are less than you will find at a place such as Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, etc."

"UVA was one of the best experiences of my life. The opportunities that the school, and especially the Engineering school, was able to offer gave me guidance through my education. There are many paths to choose at UVA and the experiences are all world class. I would recommend UVA to any and all students who value education and experience in improving their knowledge and ability to engage in the world."

"Large enough that you can make it anything you want it to be, not so large that it doesn't feel tight nit. I wish I could have never left."

"The University of Virginia is a fantastic school. The professors and array of classes are great and provide an opportunity for each student to really explore their options. The best part about the University, though, is the social atmosphere. With over 700 clubs and Greek life, there is a spot where every person can fit in. No matter what your interests, there are others that have similar interests and will work alongside you to help you realize your dreams."

"The professors absolutely want you to succeed both in the program and beyond. They are incredibly accessible and go out of their way to help you in any way they can. You also have the opportunity to learn from some of the most experienced people in the public health field from a variety of backgrounds. Charlottesville is an amazing city to live in as well!"

"The pros of my graduate program is that it has great faculty who pay attention to you and are always willing to help you out. It is also very technologically current. All lectures are recorded and uploaded online, and the students collaborate on notes using a Google doc. The social life is amazing and the surrounding town is full of bars and small restaurants and other great locations for socializing. Honestly, I cannot think of any cons unless you are someone who is used to living in a large city and have a hard time adjusting to a small town. Other than that, it is an amazing place to attain a graduate education!"

"My experiences so far have been overwhelmingly positive. The faculty and staff are exceedingly helpful. The students are brilliant and bring a wealth of experience and diverse perspectives to the table. The surrounding area includes numerous vineyards, breweries, excellent restaurants, a variety of outdoor activities, and numerous athletic events. My only complaint is that because the area is so awesome, the cost of living is pretty high (although I am originally from NC, which has a really low cost of living, so I may be biased). Additionally, I have not been super impressed with the bus system nor the parking situation, and the traffic is unusually bad for the size of the community. However, again I am relatively new here, so it is possible I am not used to the system yet. Regardless, I think the University of Virginia and specifically the Law School and the Batten School cannot be beat!"

"You meet a lot of people and make a lot of connections. You figure out what you plan to do for your career, though this decision sometimes is difficult and you have more opportunities and an easier path if you make it sooner than later. Classes can be difficult but you learn a lot, and you have a lot of free time so you have to know how to motivate yourself and manage your own time."

"UVA is a great school with great professors and a very driven environment. It was definitely an adjustment getting used to the caliber of work that the institution demands, but UVA taught me how to do research and think analytically."

"Very academically challenging school with a thriving student culture as well. Despite stereotypes, the student body is fairly diverse and you can find your niche if you look for it. Engineering school is very time consuming and mentally straining."

"UVA is a great school that is very academically challenging but offers all manners of social and personal benefits outside of the classroom. The professors and students are top notch and work hard to maintain their edge. The students are very much of the "work hard, play hard" mentality, providing a stress relief from the academics. Overall, the atmosphere of UVA is very open to all walks of life and everyone can find a niche in which to thrive and find themselves."

"As a recent graduate of UVa, I found my overall experience to be very rewarding both academically and socially. My course load was very challenging, though relevant to my career interest and I enjoyed the topics that were taught. I am thankful that I was able to complete a 5 year co-op Master's degree program with them, and highly recommend others interested in this opportunity to look into the requirements of their respective programs thoroughly. For me, this program was something that I had wanted to pursue for a long time, and now that I have completed it, I am without a doubt happy with the decision that I made."

"Charlottesville is beautiful, and the student body at the law school has a great sense of community. There are many social events, and housing is not too expensive. This is not the best school to go to in terms of diversity or career support if you are interested in any type of work other than corporate work. Even if you are interested in corporate work, sometimes there is not much guidance on how to take the next steps in preparing for and finding a job. The administration is not particularly supportive or communicative, and can be downright cold at times. That being said, UVA Law is unique in that it offers public service fellowships to students without jobs after graduation, and has a reasonable loan forgiveness plan. Overall the school is a good place, but if you are not wealthy, white, and corporate-focused, you will likely feel out of place."

"Pros-The history, staff, students, and overall academic environment at the University of Virginia. Cons-Some professors are a bit too indoctrinated in outdated teachings and ideologies. (ie Cold War Anti-Soviet ideologies)"
