"I never once met with an advisor. I am not sure if I was supposed to find one or if one was supposed to contact me. I was satisfied with the classes I took but I did not feel completely ready for the real world. I also hated the profession I chose; I am now pursuing a graduate degree in a completely different area. Perhaps if I would have hunted down an advisor..."

"Western Michigan has one of the best music therapy programs in the country. As an equivalency/Master's student, I've had the opportunity to take undergraduate and graduate-level courses simultaneously in order to complete my degree in the quickest time possible. The faculty at WMU create a great environment that fosters student growth and prepares them to enter their internships and careers with the confidence and skills needed to be successful in the field."

"Attending Western Michigan University has sufficiently prepared me for the next steps in my professional career. The courses I have taken have both motivated and prepared me to thrive in a graduate program, as well as an entry-level position. The school is widely diverse, has a multitude of clubs and programs to join, as well as a friendly student body. Campus is small enough to where you will see familiar faces around, which is comforting as a incoming freshman. The class sizes are generally small, giving you easy accessibility to your professor, and to have deep discussion with your classmates. The university also has a wide variety of services in order to help you succeed - such as, The Counseling Center, The Writing Center, Career and Student Employment Services, etc. I highly enjoyed my time as Western student and would recommend WMU to any student looking for a fun, friendly, engaged community to learn in."

"I attended Western Michigan University for my undergrad and graduated with my Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Health Services in the Spring of 2016. I was very pleased to have been accepted into their well-know top 50 ranked Occupational Therapy Masters program which I began in the Fall of 2016. Western Michigan University is a great school with wonderful faculty and I am proud be be a alumni as well as a current student. They truly thrive in putting their students first and helping them succeed!"

"My undergraduate experience was a lot of fun and WMU provided me with a smooth transition into living on my own. I made life-long friends in my clubs, classes and in the community and I will forever be thankful to WMU for this. If I had to point out an area of improvement for this school, it would be their advisors. I wish someone stayed on top of my academics, extracurricular activities and career focus."

"I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Western Michigan University. The education program has prepared me for a career in teaching by requiring courses covering all aspects of education. My concentration was in English literature, and the curriculum offered a wide variety of types of literature. Additionally, Kalamazoo is a great city to live in. There's always live music and so many great restaurants to choose from."

"On the whole, I had a great experience at Western. The Philosophy department has a renowned staff. Instructors took time to invest in you if they could tell you were putting in a good effort. Larger class sizes in early coursework might have made it difficult to get personal attention but this was not difficult to overcome. The English department hosted great writing workshops in the 300-400 levels which gave me the opportunity to grow as a writer and reader. Kalamazoo is a great city and I would recommend seriously considering WMU if you are looking at any public schools in Michigan!"

"I was able to complete a lot of classes online or in a weekend day since I finished my degree remotely and that was helpful. I did not like how several classes I needed had nothing to do with my degree area"

"I recently began the master's program in occupational therapy at Western and I have been amazed with the program so far. The faculty and staff involved in our program have all been extremely helpful in optimizing our education and experience. Our professors have first-hand knowledge of the profession and the experiences they share have been valuable to understanding the requirements of becoming an exceptional occupational therapist."

"Western Michigan University is a good school to go to most graduate programs do not require the GRE or GMAT..however if you do not get into your program of choice you are stuck with a degree that goes nowhere. You will need to go back for a masters degree. The University is very competitive!!"

"As a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed Business transfer to WMU, I fell in love with Cultural Anthropology and Global Studies. Upon meeting a vehement set of faculty from the get-go, I was astounded by the amount of research my professors had accomplished in various parts of the world. Their real-life experiences bridged the gap from remote locations on the globe to the classroom. They made me feel as if I too could do my part to make the world a better place. Classes were small and one-on-one contact with professors was encouraged. I even got the opportunity to study abroad in Costa Rica, for a similar cost as a semester at Western. I wish my program had included more networking/shadowing opportunities so I could see what the nature of the job market was, prior to graduation. My hopes for helping others through the framework of culture were met with requests to continue higher educational degrees. After gaining real world insight into the various fields and a period of time to make a small dent in my student loan debt, I have decided to return to a graduate program in Occupational Therapy at Western. I was pleased with the education I received the first time around at WMU and feel that my current degree has prepared me for my true calling as an OT."

"The Medieval Institute at Western Michigan is globally known and should be for its annual International Congress on Medieval Studies. This conference is a fantastic networking and exploratory tool for serious academic medievalists and people who are tangentially interested in medieval studies. The graduate program hires its students to work for the exhibitors and presenters, which is fantastic experience. Graduate students are also often offered teaching positions in partnership with other medievalist graduate students, which is a great boost to one's academic and general employment resume. These two opportunities, coupled with Western Michigan's membership in a university consortium that allows students to take courses at the Newberry Library in downtown Chicago as well as other places, are the best aspects of this program. On the downside, there is very little support for students in terms of advising, program completion, or career networking. The Institute is interdisciplinary and not currently structured (they're going through an overhaul of the program requirements as of the 16-17 school year) for any students not arriving with a clear and focused area of research. The student is expected to discover any and all faculty working in his/her interest and create that relationship on his/her own; there is not much guidance from the Institute itself as to connecting with (or even being introduced to) relevant faculty. Also, the timing of offered classes makes the degree itself somewhat cumbersome to complete. The opportunities to connect to other places and people outside of and beyond Western are the best and strongest aspects of this program; if you're looking to round out your understanding of medieval studies before going into a PhD program, this is a great stepping stone that you can use for its connections if not its academic integrity. If you're uncertain about your specific interest in medieval studies or if you're not interested in an academic career, this is a less suitable program."

"I had an incredible experience at Western. The staff, professors and students create a great campus community. My advice? Get involved in as much as you can - you'll meet and work with so many incredible people while building your resume and serving communities."
