Mixed exper w/GRCC: have completed online courses, professors & academics excellent. Trouble is admin-side: my advice, ask very pointed questions & triple-check any info provided. My exper is that they are tutition/revenue-oriented & student needs come a very distant second. Examples: despite many opportunities, acad advisor failed to indic a partic course would satisfy GRCC associate's degree req but not be transferrable to intended 4-yr univ...well into course bef she bothered to share that info. Certain... Read More it was the $$ as now have to take the add'l course. Also, felt pressured to enroll in W'23 term to meet Reconnect program time requirements despite signif personal issues currently being experienced. Called Financial Aid Reconnect Coord Jan.30th to explain situation. He said I could withdraw & petition for Reconnect program re-enrollment at a later date. So I completed online withdraw process. Shocked to later receive a bill for $1K towards "tuition"...I hadn't had time to read a single page or have a single assignment due/submitted. The Financial Aid coord NEVER said a word about this, and while the online withdraw process indicated there would be a "W" "penalty" grade, it didn't mention any monetary penalty. Again, all about the revenue $$.

After graduating from Grand Rapids Community College with an Associate in Business Management and Supervision. I learned so much about myself and how giving time to others allowed me to think of someone rather than myself. The courses that I took provided essential information for an actual career. The position I had on campus as a Student Assistant in the Diversity Learning Center taught me the most. I learned that my problems were insignificant compared to others worries. I learned how to do what scientist have yet to figure out, that is to slow down time. I did not have to give the clothes off my back or donate my last dollar, I simply contributed time along with compassion. Time seems to speed up when you are hustling and bustling through life. Nevertheless, when you actually begin to pay attention and actively notice new things, you can slow down time. My perception of time was forever changed along with my plans for the future. I used to sit and write down all my goals, short-term and long, and my list seemed to grow and my progress seemed to slow. My favorite song, Wasted, Carrie Underwood sings, I dont wanna spend my life jaded waiting to wake up one day and find that Ive let all these years go by wasted. I plan to achieve my goals one step at a time but always taking some time to give back to others somehow, someway, every day.
