Recent grad from the UNTHSC MPH online program here. Please be aware that the UNTHSC online MPH program is a total disaster. Despite this is being a cheaper online MPH program, saving money by enrolling in this program is not worth it... This is one of the few times I believe that you pay for what you get. The course material is great and the professors have expertise, yet lack professionalism. The majority of course grades are based mainly on discussion posts. While this sounds easy, after about 15 hours... Read More worth of classes it genuinely starts to feel like a waste of time. Very rarely will your course projects/presentations/exams make sense. Often, they are not "real-world" application AT ALL and are purely based on extreme hypotheticals that make minimal sense. Advisors are blind to the ways of the course and believe the program is, "The best thing since the state founded Dr. Pepper" (Actual quote). The program is easy, yes, but there are so many operational issues embedded within the program that the program becomes is non-constructive and obsolete. Unmentioned positive notes: -4 out of the 5 core courses are GREAT!! The professors for these courses really were truly the MVPs and the whole reason I did not leave this program. -Practice experience (Basically the required 1 year internship) is very easy. Many of my classmates had their supervisors sign off on this and just took on extra responsibilities at work. Personally, I do suggest actually doing this though. I would say that this is where the majority of the actual learning comes from. -Many public health leaders are familiar with people from the program and will like your resume because of that ***see negative to this in the next section Unmentioned negative notes: -Other than the core 5 courses, all other courses are offered infrequently prolonging the amount of time you are in the program. -Limited electives lead to enrolling in courses you may not be interested (15 of my 42 hours are focused on health politics/law type courses because of this and have no personal interest in the field of politics/law) -Advisors are disconnected from all other programs at the school. My advisor, who was previously a BSN, essentially told me she has no idea what happens outside of SPH. -Professors seem uninterested in courses; Many will not provide "lectures" (aka all course material is strictly from a book/"outside readings" or will use lectures/syllabus/etc. from previous professors) -***Many of my previous peers now struggle in these positions because the program does not live up to what it states it does.
